High school basketball: Frazee’s basket gives McGuffey 3rd straight win
McGuffey used a layup by Wyatt Frazee with 20 seconds remaining to take the lead and went on to a 47-45 victory over host Ligonier Valley in a nonsection boys basketball game Tuesday night.
Frazee’s basket put McGuffey ahead 46-45 and Sam Stout added a free throw with seven seconds left. McGuffey got a stop at the buzzer to secure the win.
Kolt McGowan scored a career-high 17 points for McGuffey (3-2), which has won three in a row.
Ligonier Valley’s record falls to 2-2.
Monessen 67, Nazareth Prep 56
A big third quarter helped Monessen rally to beat Nazareth Prep, 67-56 in a nonsection game.
The Greyhounds trailed by four at halftime, but used a 16-5 advantage in the third to seize control.
Tayvin Cragette led three Greyhounds in double figures with 18 points. Torrence Taylor added 14 points and Jay’veon Jeffries scored 12.
Grey Wyble had a game-high 23 points for the Saints () and Ahfan Harrison finished with 18 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 38, Bentworth 33
Dayten Marion had 15 points to pace Jefferson-Morgan (2-0) in a 38-33 in a nonsection win over Bentworth (2-1).
Jeremiah Robertson added 13 points for the Rockets, who led 19-15 at halftime and extended the lead to eight by the end of the third quarter.
Ben Hays scored 12 points to lead the Bearcats.
Burgettstown 68, Environmental Charter 40:
Blake Neal led four Burgettstown players in double figures with 19 points in a 68-40 win over Environmental Charter (1-1).
Colton County added 16 points for the Blue Devils, Lance Duran contributed 13 points and Caleb Malatik scored 11.
Burgettstown (1-2) led 35-20 at halftime and used a 21-10 advantage in the third quarter to stretch the lead even further.
Delron Rowe and Caleb Dalton scored 10 points apiece for Environmental Charter.
McKeesport 68, Belle Vernon 59
McKeesport outscored Belle Vernon, 18-6, in the fourth quarter to rally for a 68-59 victory.
Lamont Perkins had a game-high 20 points for the Tigers, who trailed 53-50 after three quarters. Brian Jones added 15 points for McKeesport (2-1) and Darryl McCullough and Makai Daniels scored 10 apiece.
Belle Vernon raced out to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter and led 30-28 at halftime.
The Leopards (2-3) were paced by Cam Jenko’s 15 points. Curty Wade added 13 points and Luca Ghilani finished with 10.
Frazier 64, Mapletown 15
Koby Stewart netted 24 points to help Frazier cruise to a 64-15 win over Mapletown (0-3).
The Commodores (2-2) raced out to a 25-2 lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back.
Austin Stewart added 10 points for Frazier.
Chartiers-Houston 70, Brentwood 51
Aaron Walsh poured in a game-high 21 points and Chartiers-Houston (2-2) scored a 70-51 road win at Brentwood (1-2).
Brody McCrerey added a career-best 18 points for the Bucs and Noah Doyle scored 10.
Andrew Schmidt led Brentwood with 20 points and Deng Mu scored 18.
Beth-Center 90, Charleroi 78
Beth-Center scored at least 20 points in every quarter and defeated Charleroi, 90-78.
Brayden Hull led the high-scoring Bulldogs (2-1) with 22 points. Jason Zellie followed with 18 points, Parker Amos netted 16 and Hunter Bobbs had 12.
Xavion Thomas scored a game-high 23 points, which included five three-point field goals, for Charleroi (1-2). Jason Keranko added 17.
Avella 73, West Greene 60
Nate Cilia poured in a game-high 26 points and visiting Avella used a strong fourth quarter to beat West Greene 73-60 in a nonsection game.
The score was tied 25-25 at halftime and West Greene (0-3) moved ahead 45-43 at the end of three quarters. Avella (4-1) won the game with a 30-15 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Bryce Wright chipped in with 16 points for Avella, Brayden Fuller added 15 and Rylan Bell scored 10 to give the Eagles four players in double figures.
Will Shipman scored 22 points to pace the Pioneers while Landon Hill had 11 and Darrin Knight tallied 10.
Ringgold 71, Albert Gallatin 37
Ringgold put three players in double figures, led by David Wachinski with 14 points, and routed visiting Albert Gallatin, 71-37.
Braylen Lomax finished with 12 points and Takeo Tolliver had 11 for Ringgold (2-1), which led 18-4 after one quarter and 36-18 at halftime.
Laurel Highlands 76, Waynesburg 60
Kayden Smith scored 22 points and Laurel Highlands used a big second quarter to beat Waynesburg 76-60 in a nonsection game.
LH (3-1) trailed 16-14 after one quarter before holding a 27-16 edge in the second period to take a 41-29 lead at halftime. Waynesburg (2-2) closed to within 58-49 entering the fourth quarter.
Jackson Dean had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead Waynesburg. Dane Woods added 20 points and six rebounds, and Cole Headlee finished with 14 points.

Avella 56, Frazier 48
Kenzie Miller scored 22 points and Avella cashed at the free-throw line to earn a 56-48 home-court win over Frazier.
Avella (2-3) led 22-17 at halftime but Frazier (1-3) battled back and tied the score at 33-33 at the end of the third quarter. Avella held a 23-15 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter, when Miller went 10-for-14 at the free-throw line.
Haleigh Rush tossed in 19 points for Avella. Frazier’s Allie Yauch scored a game-high 25 points.
