High school basketball: J-M wins section opener, stays unbeaten

Jefferson-Morgan scored 48 points in the first half and went on to a 73-27 victory over Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 3 boys basketball game Friday on the Blue Devils’ hardwood.

J-M (1-0, 3-0) led 22-13 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored Burgettstown (0-1, 1-3) by a 37-9 margin over the next two periods. The Rockets led 48-17 at halftime.

Jeremiah Robertson led J-M’s attack by scoring a game-high 17 points. Triton Fowler was close behind with 15 points and Dayton Marion gave the Rockets three players in double figures by scoring 14.

Lance Duran had 11 points to lead Burgettstown.

Belle Vernon 70, West Mifflin 51

Balanced scoring helped Belle Vernon overcome a slow start and the Leopards went on to a 70-51 victory over visiting West Mifflin in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

Belle Vernon (1-0, 3-3) trailed 12-10 at the end of the first quarter before scoring 45 points over the next two periods to build a 55-40 lead.

Cam Jenko led four Leopards in double figures with 14 points. Elijah Majors followed with 13, Vincenzo Francia scored 12 and Curtis Wade had 11.

Julian Dewberry was the leading scorer for West Mifflin (0-1, 0-7) with 13 points.

South Allegheny 80, Washington 59

Washington played two good quarters but it was the other two – the first and fourth – that cost the Prexies in an 80-59 road loss at South Allegheny in non-section play.

South Allegheny (4-1) outscored Wash High 19-8 in the first quarter. The Prexies closed to within 36-30 at halftime and were down 53-41 entering the final period, when the Gladiators held a 27-18 scoring edge.

Both teams had four players score in double figures.

Tristan Reed led the Wash High attack with 21 points followed by William Callan with 12 and Tayvonne France and Jamarie Walker each with 10.

South Allegheny’s Fisher IeLace tallied a game-high 27 points that included seven three-point field goals. Drew Cook followed with 19 points, Smaj Reason had 17 and Alisah Cook had 11.

McGuffey 40, Brownsville 27

McGuffey shut out visiting Brownsville in the third quarter en route to a 40-27 victory in a non-section game played on the Highlanders’ home court.

McGuffey (4-2), which has won four in a row, trailed 21-19 at halftime, then outscored the Falcons 9-0 in the pivotal third quarter. The Highlanders closed the game with a 12-6 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.

Kolt McGowan had a big game with 19 points to spark McGuffey.

Brownsville (0-4) received a team-high nine points from Jaiden Praster.

Bentworth 55, Riverview 45

Ben hays scored 20 points and Bentworth won its Class 2A Section opener, 55-45, over visiting Riverview.

The Bearcats (1-0, 3-1) led 38-34 after three quarters and secured the victory with a 17-11 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Hays was supported by Ryan Moessner, who tossed in 16 points, and Levi Urcho’s 11.

Rex Roberts led Riverview (0-1, 2-5) with 13 points.

Beth-Center 64, Mapletown 29

Parker Amos led four Beth-Center players in double figures with 18 points and the Bulldogs won its second consecutive game, 64-29, over visiting Mapletown in Class 2A Section 3.

Beth-Center (1-0, 3-1) led 18-8 after one quarter and moved out to a 42-17 lead at halftime.

Hunter Bobbs scored 12 points, Brayden Hull 11 and Brayden Ozohonish 10 for the Bulldogs.

Ashton Walker netted 10 points for Mapletown (0-1, 0-5).

Avella 62, Carlynton 47

Bryce Wright scored 20 points, Cam Ullom had a double-double and Avella defeated visiting Carlynton 62-47 in a non-section contest.

The Eagles pulled away in the second half after leading 33-27 at halftime.

Ullom finished with 11 points to go with 10 rebounds. Brayden Fuller and Rylan Bell each scored 11 points for Avella (5-1), which has won three in a row.

Isaac Anker had 11 points and Michael Jenkins scored 10 for Carlynton

Ringgold 52, South Fayette 48

Ringgold forged a lead with three strong quarters of defense and then held off a late rally by host South Fayette to beat the Lions 42-38 in the Class 5A Section 3 opener Thursday.

Ringgold (1-0, 3-1) held leads of 11-8, 21-16 and 31-23 at the first three quarter stops. South Fayette made a late charge and held a 15-11 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.

Ringgold had a balanced attack led by Takeo Tolliver’s 15 points. Dennis Hawkins and Braylen Lomax each tossed in 10 points. The Rams have won three in a row.

Tyson Wright’s 10 points were tops for South Fayette (0-1, 1-4).

Serra Catholic 98, California 30

Serra Catholic jumped out early and never looked back in downing visiting California 98-30 in non-section play Thursday.

Serra Catholic (3-3) had a 35-8 lead after the first quarter and a 57-16 halftime advantage.

Serra Catholic’s Kris Sharp scored a game-high 27 points. Teammate Brayden Graham had 24. Max Lape (11) and Tyler Sapida (10) were also in double figures for the Eagles.

Alan Dennis led the Trojans (1-1) in scoring with 11 points.

Girls results

Jefferson-Morgan 52, Turkeyfoot 21

Some torrid long-range shooting by Ava Wood carried Jefferson-Morgan to a 52-21 victory over Turkeyfoot on the Rockets’ home court.

Wood poured in a game-high 19 points that included five three-point field goals. She helped J-M (4-1) build leads of 20-3 at the end of one quarter and 38-8 at halftime. The Rockets have won three in a row.

Frazier 52, Carmichaels 33

Allie Yauch scored a game-high 25 points to lead Frazier to a 52-33 non-section victory over visiting Carmichaels on Thursday.

Frazier’s Malana Burton was in double figures with 13 points.

Ke’Lani Chun led Carmichaels (1-4) in scoring with nine points.

In other games

In boys action, Canon-McMillan was a 54-48 winner over visiting Imani Christian. Jeannette rolled over California, 80-34, Chartiers-Houston edged visiting Fort Cherry 50-47 in a Class 2A Section 3 game, and Monessen won at Charleroi, 67-63 in overtime. The McGuffey girls defeated visiting Southmoreland, 50-20.
