High school basketball: Undefeated Trinity girls win section opener
Undefeated Trinity overcame a slow start and a 25-point performance by Bethel Park’s Kat Boff to defeat the visiting Black Hawks 58-39 in the Class 5A Section 4 girls basketball opener Thursday night at Hiller Hall.
Trinity (1-0, 5-0) trailed 9-3 at the end of the first quarter but put its offense in high gear after that point. The Hillers scored 17 points in the second quarter to take a 20-17 halftime lead. Trinity netted 18 points in the third quarter and 20 in the fourth.
Sutton Williamson led the Trinity track by scoring 21 points and Gabby Rieg followed in the scoring column with 12.
Beth-Center 49, Apollo-Rodge 42
Violet Trump had a double-double and Beth-Center rallied late for a 49-42 victory over visiting Apollo-Ridge in a nonsection game.
Trump tossed in a game-high 24 points and also grabbed 15 rebounds as B-C improved its record to 1-4. The Bulldogs trailed 24-21 at halftime and 36-34 entering the fourth quarter. Trump scored six of her points in the pivotal fourth quarter when B-C held a 15-6 scoring edge.
Kiley McDaniel finished with nine points to help the Bulldogs’ offense.
Apollo-Ridge (2-4) was led in scoring by Madison Hughley’s 13 points.
Avella 49, Mapletown 31
Haleigh Rush scored a game-high 21 points and Avella broke open a close game with some long-range shooting in the third quarter to beat Mapletown 49-31 in a Class A Section 2 game on the Eagles’ home court.
Avella (1-0, 3-3) led 18-16 at halftime and erupted for 20 points in the third quarter and 31 in the second half. The Eagles had four different players make a three-point shot during the pivotal third quarter, which ended with Avella on top 38-24.
Dakota McCullough finished with 11 points for Avella.
Mapletown (0-1, 1-4) received 12 points from Mckenna Lotspeich.
Geibel Catholic 51. West Greene 45
Emma Larkin scored 13 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, pushing undefeated Geibel Catholic past host West Greene 51-45 in a hard-fought Class A Section 2 opener on the Pioneers’ hardwood.
Larkin connected on 15 of 20 free throws on the night to offset a 20-point effort, including four three-pointers, by West Greene sophomore guard Jillissa Yeater. Kendra Tharp followed with 18 points and 12 rebounds for West Greene (0-1, 4-2).
Janiah Darnell added 10 points for Geibel (1-0, 6-0) while Mallory Clemmer had nine points to go along with double-figure totals in rebounds and blocked shots.
Waynesburg 60, Brownsville 39
Tess Pauley scored 18 points, leading three Waynesburg players in double figures as the Raiders remained undefeated with a 60-39 victory over host Brownsville in the Class 3A Section 3 opener.
Waynesburg (1-0, 4-0) trailed 15-10 after one quarter but moved ahead 27-20 at halftime and increased the gap in the second half.
Peyton Cowell had 17 points for the Raiders and Emma Blair flipped in 14.
Skyler Gates scored a game-high 23 points to lead Brownsville (0-1, 1-3).
South Fayette 82, Mars 35
Ryan Oldaker poured in a game-high 26 points and defending state champion South Fayette rolled to an 82-35 victory over visiting Mars in Class 5A Section 3.
South Fayette (1-0, 5-0) took control from the outset, forging a 28-2 lead at the end of one quarter. The Lions led 51-11 at halftime.
Haylie Lamonde and Juliette Leroux each tossed in 14 points for South Fayette and Ella Vierra had 12.
Mars’ Alexis Cashdollar had a strong game, scoring 24 points.
Belle Vernon 53, Ringgold 23
Belle Vernon put three players in double figures and overcame a slow start to beat Ringgold 53-23 in a Class 4A Section 3 game on the Rams’ home court.
Belle Vernon (1-0, 4-1) trailed 10-8 after one quarter but outscored Ringgold (0-1, 1-3) 22-5 in the second quarter and 13-4 in the third to take a commanding lead.
Lyla McConnell and Aubrey Brown each scored 11 points for the Leopards, who have won four in a row. Saylor Lee scored 10.
Ringgold’s Jada Gernot had a game-high 12 points.
Boys results
Trinity 55, Bethel Park 51
Jonah Williamson scored a game-high 25 points and Trinity used some stellar first-half defense to beat visiting Bethel Park 55-51 in the Class 5A Section 3 opener at Hiller Hall.
Trinity (1-0, 2-3) raced out to a 29-16 lead at halftime. Bethel Park trimmed the gap to 43-31 at the end of three quarters and Trinity held on over the final eight minutes.
In addition to Williamson’s big game, Trinity received 12 points from Anthony Giorgi.
Bethel Park’s Michael Bruckner scored 17 points and made four shots from behind the arc. Owen Turoski followed with 14 points and Will Thomas had 12.
