High school basketball: Wash High girls pull out 47-45 road win

It is still very early in the season but the Washington girls basketball team picked up a key road win Monday night that could loom large at season’s end. The Prexies held on for a 47-45 win at Brownsville in Class 3A Section 3.

Olivia Woods scored a game-high 19 points for Wash High (2-0, 3-1), which led 23-28 at halftime and 37-30 entering the fourth quarter.

Ava Clark tallied 19 points for Brownsville (0-2, 1-4) and Skyler Gates had 15.

South Fayette 64, West Allegheny 23

Undefeated and defending state champion South Fayette cruised to a 64-23 victory at previously unbeaten West Allegheny in a Class 5A Section 3 contest.

Juliette Leroux led the Lions (2-0, 6-0) in scoring with 18 points. South Fayette secured the win early, racing out to a 26-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and taking a 48-8 advantage into halftime.

Laliah Wright scored 14 points for the Lions and Ryan Oldaker tossed in 11.

West Allegheny is 1-1 in section and 4-1 overall.

Monessen 44, Avella 21

Madison Johnson scored all of her 19 points in the first half and Monessen defeated visiting Avella 44-21 in a Class A Section 2 game played on the Greyhounds’ hardwood.

Monessen (1-1, 1-3) won for the first time and did it with a dominant first half. The Greyhounds led 16-7 at the end of one quarter and moved out to a 36-11 advantage at halftime.

Na’jaziah Carter scored 15 points for Monessen.

Avella (1-1, 3-4) had its two-game winning streak snapped. Madison Rush led the Eagles with six points.

Belle Vernon 53, Yough 18

Saylor Lee and Aubrey Brown sparked a big first half for Belle Vernon and the Leopards went on to a 53-18 win over host Yough in Class 4A Section 3.

Lee scored a team-high 16 points and Brown was right behind with 15 as the Leopards improved to 2-0 in section and 5-2 overall. Brown also had eight steals. Isis Almyty chipped in with 10 rebounds.

The Leopards led 38-13 at halftime.

Bentworth 53, South Side Beaver 17

Bentworth picked up its first win of the season, defeating South Side Beaver 53-17 in a non-section game on the Bearcats’ home court.

Junior Bella Moyer led all scorers with 17 points while adding seven steals and five rebounds. Senior Zoie McDonald contributed nine points. Nora Lindley and Liz Wade each recorded double-digit rebounds with 10 apiece.

Defensively, Bentworth (1-3) set the tone early. Jesse Laskey recorded 10 steals.

Boys results

Belle Vernon 83, Uniontown 77

Curtis Wade poured in a game-high 32 points and Belle Vernon outlasted visiting Uniontown 83-77 in overtime in a non-section game.

Belle Vernon (4-3) withstood a long-range shooting exhibition by Uniontown’s Isaac Ellsworth, who scored 30 points and made nine three-point baskets.

The Leopards trailed 29-25 at halftime and went to overtime tied at 70. Belle Vernon held a 13-7 scoring edge in the extra session.

Luca Ghilani scored 20 points for Belle Vernon.

Charleroi 87, California 57

Charleroi has been alternating wins and losses. On Monday, it was time for a win and Charleroi delivered with an 87-57 win at California in a non-section boys basketball game Monday night.

Charleroi (3-3) produced a season-high in points. The Cougars put up 47 in the first half that ended with Charleroi up by 21 points.

The Cougars used a balanced attack, putting four players in double figures led by Grant Shields with 18 points. Xavion Thomas was close behind with 17 points, Jackson Kernako tossed in 14 and Braeden Todaro had 11.

California’s record clipped to 0-3.

Charleroi will try for its first two-game winning streak when it hosts Steel Valley on Wednesday.

In other games

The McGuffey girls were a 54-40 winner over visiting Keystone Oaks in Class 3A Section 3. No game details were available by press time. The Highlanders are 1-0 in section and 4-3 overall.
