High school basketball: J-M boys get defensive, stay undefeated
Jeremiah Robertson scored 17 points as Jefferson-Morgan remained undefeated with a 46-29 victory over visiting Beth-Center in a Class 2A Section 3 boys basketball game Tuesday night.
The Rockets (2-0, 4-0) forged a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and held Beth-Center (1-1, 3-2) to no more than eight points in a quarter the rest of the way. J-M led 25-14 at halftime.
Dayten Marion tossed in 13 points to help the Rockets’ cause and Brayden Ellsworth tallied 10.
Upper St. Clair 62, Canon-McMillan 43
A slow start doomed Canon-McMillan (1-1, 4-2) in a 62-43 loss at Upper St. Clair (2-1, 5-1) in Class 6A Section 2.
Upper St. Clair led the Big Macs 22-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Roman Koenemund netted a game-high 18 points for Canon-McMillan.
Jake Foster and Ryan Robbins scored 11 apiece for the Panthers.
Jeannette 71, Bentworth 24
It was a tough night for Bentworth (1-1, 3-2) in a 71-24 loss to defending WPIAL Class 2A champ Jeannette (2-0, 5-1) in a Section 1 contest.
The Jayhawks led 21-5 at the end of the first quarter and didn’t look back.
Ryan Moessner scored 12 points to lead the Bearcats.
Markus McGowan led three Jayhawks with 14 points. Kymone Brown added 12 points and Xavier Odorisio-Farrow scored 10.
Belle Vernon 74, Yough 25
Belle Vernon scored 52 points in the first half and cruised to a 74-25 victory at Yough in Class 4A Section 3.
The Leopards (2-0, 5-3), who won for the second time in as many nights, led 22-6 at the end of the first quarter and 52-19 at halftime.
Cutis Wade led Belle Vernon with 14 points, Elijah Majors had 13 and Cam Jenko also had 13.
Seton LaSalle 70, Waynesburg 43
Waynesburg got off to a slow start and was never able to recover as the Raiders lost 70-43 at Seton LaSalle in a non-section game.
Seton LaSalle (5-2) led 16-4 after the first eight minutes and Waynesburg (2-3) had to play catch-up the rest of the way. The Rebels led 29-17 at halftime and 46-29 after three quarters.
Jaleel Wright scored a game-high 19 points for the Rebels.
Cole Headlee had 15 points and five assists to pace Waynesburg. Dane Woods netted 14 points.
Springdale 76, California 42
A pair of Springdale players scored in the 30’s in a 76-42 victory over California (0-2, 0-4) in a Class 2A Section 1 game.
Robby Simmen had 39 points for the Dynamos (1-1, 2-3) and Liam Dexter scored 30.
Ben Ziolecki and Weston Montielli had 11 points apiece for the Trojans.
Fort Cherry 70, Burgettstown 49
Behind a game-high 23 points from Connor Vansickle, Fort Cherry (1-1, 2-2) cruised to a 70-49 win over Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Gavin Grace added 10 points for the Rangers, who led 25-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Blake Neal led Burgettstown (0-2, 1-4) with 13 points and Damon Shaffer scored 12.
Girls Results
Fort Cherry 52, Carmichaels 13
Allison Litman and Julie Klose both recorded a double-double to help Fort Cherry (2-4) secure a 52-13 win over Carmichaels (1-4) in a nonsection game.
Litman had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Klose finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Emily Pfender added 11 points for the Rangers, who led 27-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Ke’Lani Chun had five points for the Mikes.
Burgettstown 39, Laurel 24
Burgettstown held Laurel to single-digit point totals in all four quarters in a 39-24 victory in a nonsection contest.
Both teams started slow offensively with Burgettstown leading 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. But the Blue Devils scored 12 in the second and third quarters to pull away.
Paige Klodowski and Savanna Rush scored 10 points apiece to lead Burgettstown (5-1).
Alexis Bair had eight points for Laurel (4-2).
Thomas Jefferson 53, Trinity 49
The Hillers kept it close, but ultimately dropped its first game of the season, 53-49, a Class 5A Section 4 game at Thomas Jefferson.
Sutton Williamson led the way for Trinity (1-1, 5-1) with 17 points and Gabby Humphreys put in 12 points. Trinity attempted a rally, outscoring Thomas Jefferson, 19-15 in the fourth quarter, but fell short.
Maggie Spell led all scorers with 21 points for Thomas Jefferson (2-0, 6-1).
West Greene 50, Mapletown 12
West Greene held Mapletown to only two points over the final three quarters to turn a 14-10 game after one quarter into a 50-12 runaway win for the Pioneers in Class A Section 2.
West Greene (1-1, 5-2) stretched the 14-10 lead into advantages of 26-10 at halftime and 42-10 after three quarters.
Kendra Tharp (14 points), Madelyn Roberts (13) and Jillissa Yeater (11) scored in double figures for the Pioneers.
Baldwin 58, Peters Township 51
Peters Township rallied from an early deficit to tie the game at 45-45, but Baldwin finished on a 13-6 run to close out a 58-51 victory in a Class 5A Section game.
The Highlanders led 41-27 at halftime, but the Indians got back into it by winning the third quarter 13-2.
Bri Morreale scored 22 points for the Indians (0-2, 3-3) and hit the 300th three-pointer of her career.
Julianne Ott had a game-high 25 points for the Highlanders (1-0, 5-1).
Frazier 60, Charleroi 32
Chloe Harger led three Frazier players in double figures in a 60-32 win over Charleroi (3-4) in a nonsection game.
Alle Yauch had 15 points for the Commodores (3-4) and Malana Burton scored 10. The Commodores used a 21-8 advantage in the third quarter to take control.
Eden Smith led the Cougars with 14 points.
In other games
South Fayette was a 60-49 winner at Bethel Park in a Class 5A Section 3 boys game. The Thomas Jefferson boys defeated visiting Trinity, 59-40, also in Class 5A Section 3. The West Greene boys won at Mapletown 55-20 in Class 2A Section 3. No game details were available at press time.
