High school basketball: Burgettstown girls run winning streak to 6
Undefeated Waynesburg edges Wash High
Paige Klodowski scored 17 points and Burgettstown shut out visiting Northgate in one quarter en route to a 50-14 victory in the Blue Devils’ Class 2A Section 2 opener Thursday night.
The win was the sixth straight for Burgettstown (1-0, 6-1).
The Blue Devils controlled the game from the outset, forging leads of 19-3 at the end of the first quarter and 37-6 at halftime. Burgettstown outscored Northgate 9-0 in the fourth quarter.
Savanna Rush chipped in with 11 points for the Blue Devils.
Waynesburg 51, Washington 49
Waynesburg’s undefeated start to the season continued with a 51-49 victory over visiting Washington in a key Class 3A Section 3 game.
The game was close from start to finish. Waynesburg led 11-10 after one quarter and the score was tied 30-30 at halftime. Waynesburg moved ahead 39-38 at the end of three quarters and the Raiders held a 12-11 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.
The Raiders made 14 of 24 free throws. Wash High was 3-for-9 at the stripe.
Waynesburg (2-0, 6-0) put three players in double figures led by freshman Tess Pauley’s 19 points. Freshman Emma Blair followed with 14 points and senior Peyton Cowell had 10.
Waynesburg withstood a terrific performance by Wash High’s Olivia Woods, who poured in a game-high 24 points that included six three-point baskets.
The loss dropped Wash High’s record to 2-1 in section and 4-2 overall. The Prexies and Raiders will meet Jan. 22 in Washington.
South Fayette 72, South Fayette 26
Undefeated South Fayette, the defending PIAA Class 5A champion, gave head coach Bryan Bennett his 200th career victory by defeating visiting Montour 72-26 in a Section 3 game.
West Greene 53, Clairton 17
West Greene used a 19-1 advantage in the third quarter to run away with a 53-17 victory at Clairton in Class A Section 2.
West Greene led 22-13 at halftime and outscored Clairton 31-4 in the second half to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in section.
Kendra Tharp’s 14 points led West Greene while sophomores Jillissa Yeater and Katie Brudnock added 9 each.
Karma Fuqua scored 12 of Clairton’s 17 points. The Bears are 0-3, 1-4.
California 49, Carmichaels 14
California shut out visiting Carmichaels in the first quarter and went on to a 49-14 victory in Class 2A Section 3.
The Trojans (1-0, 2-5) led 20-0 after the first period and stretched the gap to 34-5 at halftime.
Hayley Gibson led California in scoring with 17 points.
Carmichaels is 0-1 in section and 1-6 overall.
South Park 39, Belle Vernon 38
South Park remained unbeaten in Class 4A Section 3 by pulling out a 39-38 road win over Belle Vernon.
South Park (3-0, 3-3) led 27-18 at halftime and had to hold off a second-half charge by Belle Vernon (2-1, 5-2). The Leopards closed to within 32-27 at the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles also had to withstand a 22-point performance by Belle Vernon’s Lyla McConnell.
South Park received 11 points from Hayley Bennett and 10 from Bella Stromberg.
Boys results
Jefferson-Morgan 69, Mapletown 15
Undefeated Jefferson-Morgan scored 62 points in the first half and routed winless Mapletown 69-15 in a Class 2A Section 3 game played on the Rockets’ home court.
Jefferson-Morgan (3-0, 5-0) led 35-2 after eight minutes and 62-7 at halftime.
Dayton Marion scored 15 points to lead J-M and Jermiah Robertson flipped in 12.
Mapletown is 0-3 in section and 0-7 overall.
