High school basketball: Jefferson-Morgan goes out of state to stay undefeated
John Woodward scored 16 points, leading three players in double figures for undefeated Jefferson-Morgan as the Rockets slipped past Trinity Christian of Morgantown 52-39 in the Clay-Battelle tournament in Blacksville, W.Va. on Friday night.
Jefferson-Morgan (6-0) opened a 20-10 lead in the first quarter and fought off a comeback by Trinity Christian that cut the Rockets’ lead to 37-34 at the end of the third quarter. J-M won with a 15-5 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Dayton Marion and Jermiah Robertson each scored 12 points for the Rockets.
Belle Vernon 81, Derry 61
Luca Ghilani scored a team-high 20 points, Cam Jenko and Dane Daughtery each had a double-double and Belle Vernon defeated visiting Derry 81-61 in Class 4A Section 3.
The Leopards (3-0, 6-3) overcame their own slow start and a 21-point performance by Derry’s Brayden Robinson. The Leopards trailed 25-17 after one quarter before holding a 43-24 edge over the next two periods for a 57-49 lead entering the final quarter.
Jenko finished with 18 points to go with 12 rebounds. Daugherty had 10 points and was credited with 10 assists. Elijah Major scored 17 points for the Leopards.
Carmichaels 62, Burgettstown 48
Chase Ankfrom and Brayden Andrews combined for 30 points and Carmichaels won for the first time, 62-48 at Burgettstown, in Class 2A Section 3.
Carmichaels (1-1, 1-4) built a 28-24 halftime lead and outscored Burgettstown (0-2, 1-4) by a 34-24 margin in the second half.
Ankrom scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Mikes and Andrews chipped in with 10.
Burgettstown’s Blake Neal had a team-high 19 points. Colton County scored 14.
Neighborhood Academy 67, Monessen 29
Julius Page scored 19 points and undefeated Neighborhood Academy shut down Monessen in the second half and the host Greyhounds 67-29 in Class A Section 2.
Neighborhood Academy led 27-18 at halftime and held Monessen (0-1, 2-3) to only 11 points in the second half.
Torrence Taylor led the Greyhounds in scoring with nine points.
Neighborhood Academy is 1-0 in section and 5-0 overall.
Fort Cherry 55, Beth-Center 51
Connor Vansickle had a huge game, scoring 29 points and powering Fort Cherry to a 55-51 win at Beth-Center.
The Rangers trailed 29-23 at halftime and 41-36 after three periods. The Rangers won with a 19-10 edge in the fourth quarter.
Landon Trnavsky chipped in with 12 points for Fort Cherry.
Thomas Jefferson 57, South Fayette 40
Visiting Thomas Jefferson outscored South Fayette in all four quarters and defeated the Lions 57-40 in Class 5A Section 3.
Girls results
Chartiers-Houston 66, Beth-Center 40
Chartiers-Houston defeated host Beth-Center from long distance in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
The Bucs made 12 three-point field goals, including five by Sophie Palone, as they defeated Beth-Center, 66-40.
Palone scored all of her 15 points from behind the arc and Ava Kolovich tallied 15 points that included four three-point baskets.
The score was tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter but Chartiers-Houston (1-0, 6-1) opened a 32-31 halftime advantage. The Bucs secured the win with a 24-11 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Violet Trump’s 15 points were tops for Beth-Center (0-1, 1-5).
Bentworth 61, Jefferson-Morgan 33
Bentworth opened Class 2A Section 3 play with a 61-33 home victory over Jefferson-Morgan on Thursday.
Bentworth (1-0, 3-3) jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter. Jefferson-Morgan (0-1, 4-2) was able to cut the deficit to eight points, but Bentworth pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Bella Moyer led all scorers with 26 points and added five steals. Jesse Laskey finished with seven points and 10 steals.

The Trinity at Baldwin boys-girls doubleheader scheduled for Friday was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday. The girls game will begin at 6 p.m. with the boys slated to start at 7:45 p.m.The Southmoreland boys won a shootout over Charleroi, 86-78. Chartiers-Houston routed West Greene 63-19. Bishop Canevin was a 94-66 winner over Washington. Waynesburg received a career-high 36 points from Cole Headlee and defeated Brownsville, 63-44.
