High school basketball: Chartiers-Houston remains perfect in section
Chartiers-Houston used balanced scoring and a big third quarter to remain unbeaten in Class 2A Section 3 play as the Bucs defeated visiting Burgettstown 63-31 in a boys basketball game Tuesday night.
The win makes Chartiers-Houston 3-0 in the section and 7-2 overall.
The Bucs led 34-22 at halftime and secured the win in the third quarter when they outscored Burgettstown (0-4, 1-6) by a 19-4 margin. C-H’s Noah Doyle made three shots from three-point range in the pivotal quarter. He finished the game with 14 points.
Brody McCrerey led the Bucs in scoring with 15 points and Bryson Boskovich netted 12.
Blake Neal’s 12 points were tops for Burgettstown.
Keystone Oaks 56, Washington 36
Washington’s scoring touch disappeared in the second half as the Prexies suffered a 56-36 loss to a strong Keystone Oaks team in Class 3A Section 2.
Keystone Oaks (2-0, 8-1) jumped out to a 24-11 lead in the first quarter and Wash High (0-1, 3-5) inched a little closer in the second half as the Prexies trailed 34-23 at halftime. But KO held Wash High to only 13 points in the second half to eliminate thoughts of a comeback by the home team.
Erond Jakupi had a big night for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 24 points. Joey Colton followed with 16.
Vincent Johnson’s 10 points were tops for Wash High.
Fort Cherry 81, Mapletown 17
Fort Cherry scored 64 points in the first half and crushed winless Mapletown 81-17 in a Class 2A Section 3 game on the Rangers’ home court.
Fort Cherry (3-1, 4-2) led 31-1 after one quarter and 64-3 at halftime. Greg Alrutz almost had a triple-double. He finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and nine steals. Connor Vansickle tossed in 12 points, Gavin Grace and Kolton Smith each had 11 and Tyler Wolfe netted 10.
Mapletown (0-4, 0-8) has lost 37 consecutive games.
Bishop Canevin 61, McGuffey 27
Bishop Canevin used a huge third quarter to pull away and defeat host McGuffey 61-27 in Class 3A Section 2.
Bishop Canevin (1-0, 4-4) led 26-16 at halftime and then mounted a 23-5 scoring edge in the third quarter.
Daemar Olds led three Crusaders in double figures with 15 points.
McGuffey (0-2, 4-4) received seven points from Kolt McGowan.
Girls results
Washington 53, Burgettstown 41
Olivia Woods and Faith Partozoti each scored 15 points and Washington snapped Burgettstown’s seven-game winning streak by defeating the Blue Devils 53-41 in a non-section game.
Burgettstown (7-2) led 21-20 at halftime but Wash High (5-2) used a 15-8 edge in the third quarter to forge a 35-29 advantage.
Kyndra Wynn scored 12 points for the Prexies.
Burgettstown’s Paige Klodowski scored a game-high 18 points and Savanna Rush followed with 15.
South Fayette 63, Moon 29
Juliette Leroux scored 20 points, leading defending PIAA Class 5A champion South Fayette to a 63-29 win Monday over host Moon in Section 3.
Moon (1-2, 3-5) trailed 17-10 after one quarter, but South Fayette (4-0, 8-0) outscored the Tigers 33-10 over the next two quarters.
Ryan Oldaker netted 13 points for the Lions and Haylie Lamonde and Ella Vierra each scored 11.
Fort Cherry 70, Brentwood 23
Fort Cherry scored 52 points in the first half Monday, building a 46-point lead, and going on to a 70-23 thumping of Brentwood in Class 2A Section 2.
Fort Cherry (2-0, 4-4) led 21-4 after one quarter and 52-6 at halftime over the Spartans (0-2, 0-9).
Gianna Bianchini led a blanched FC attack by scoring 15 points. Brooke Cornali chipped in with 14 points and Allison Litman had 12.
McGuffey 69, Brownsville 35
McGuffey scored 43 points in the first half Monday and went on to a 69-35 victory over visiting Brownsville in Class 3A Section 3.
It was the fourth win in a row for surging McGuffey (3-0, 6-3). The Highlanders led 17-11 at halftime and outscored the Falcons 26-6 in the pivotal second quarter for a commanding 43-17 halftime advantage.
Hailey Rogers led McGuffey in scoring with 18 points. Maura Janovich added 17 points and Lucy Weiss followed with 15.
In other games
Jefferson-Morgan was a 66-40 winner at West Greene in a Class 2A Section 3 boys game. Also in Class 2A Section 3, Beth-Center won at Carmichaels, 67-48. In Class 2A Section 1, Clairton was a 92-28 winner over visiting California. No game details were available at press time.
