High school basketball: Waynesburg and FC girls win tournament titles

Freshman Tess Pauley scored 15 points and Waynesburg held Uniontown to three points in the pivotal fourth quarter en route to a 52-37 victory Sunday in the championship game of the Carmichaels Lions Club’s girls basketball tournament.

Waynesburg (8-1) trailed 15-12 after one quarter but moved ahead 26-21 at halftime. The Raiders led 39-34 entering the fourth quarter when they shut down Uniontown (6-2).

Peyton Cowell scored 12 points for Waynesburg and Emma Blair scored 10. The Raiders made nine three-point field goals.

Uniontown was led by Aierra Jenkins’ 16 points.

Fort Cherry 52, McGuffey 12

Fort Cherry used a huge first half to defeat McGuffey 52-12 and win the Highlanders’ holiday tournament on Saturday night.

Fort Cherry (6-4) took control early, building leads of 14-5 after one quarter, 24-7 at halftime and 45-9 at the end of three quarters.

Allison Litman led the Rangers in scoring with 16 points and Gianna Bianchini added 11.

Beth-Center wins 2

Doubleheaders are usually reserved for baseball season but Beth-Center’s girls basketball team took the “Let’s play two” motto to the hardwood on Saturday while hosting the Winter Jam Tournament.

The Bulldogs tipped off against Charleroi at 4 p.m., then approximately four hours later took the court to play Albert Gallatin, winning both games, 61-44 over the Cougars and 59-29 over the Colonials.

Violet Trump scored a game-high 24 points in each game for B-C (4-5).

Against Charleroi, Beth-Center built a 14-11 lead in the first quarter then out-scored the Lady Cougars 21-5 in the second to take a commanding 35-16 halftime lead.

Mary Bower followed Trump with 13 points and Kyleigh McDaniel added 12 points for the Bulldogs.

Eden Smith led Charleroi with 19 points and Jaelyn Caruso had eight.

In its second game, Beth-Center was in a tight battle with AG early and held a 22-21 advantage at halftime. The Bulldogs took control in the second half, outscoring Albert Gallatin 20-4 in the third to go up 42-25.

Alexia Fischer joined Trump as a double-digit scorer for B-C with 15 points.

Bethel Park 39, Belle Vernon 36

Kat Boff scored a game-high 12 points and Bethel Park held off Belle Vernon 39-36 in the Penn West California holiday event.

Bethel Park (6-2) led 22-19 at halftime and Belle Vernon (6-3) closed to within 28-26 at the end of three quarters. The Leopards hurt their chances of completing a comeback by making only six of 14 free throws.

Isis Almighty led Belle Vernon in scoring with 11 points and Aubrey Brown had 10.

Jefferson-Morgan 45, Carmichaels 30

Ava Wood scored 19 points and Jefferson-Morgan pulled away in the second half to beat Carmichwels 45-30 on Sunday in the consolation game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.

Jefferson-Morgan (5-4) trailed 13-9 after one quarter and held a one-point, 17-16 lead at halftime. The Rockets pulled out to a 30-22 lead at the end of three quarters.

Brelynn Wood tossed in 16 points for J-M. Ke’Lani Chun of Carmichaels (1-8) shared game scoring honors with Ava Wood by tossing in 19 points.

Uniontown 69, Carmichaels 16

Aierra Jenkins lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 29 points as Uniontown cruised past host Carmichaels on Saturday in the first round of the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.

Jenkins dropped in 10 field goals and was 9 of 12 from the foul line. Lyric McLee followed with 11 points for Uniontown and Ambree Long added 10.

Ke’Lani Chun was the top scorer for Carmichaels with eight points.

Waynesburg 74, Jefferson-Morgan 9

Peyton Cowell scored 15 points in Waynesburg’s 74-9 win overJefferson-Morgan at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament on Saturday.

Tess Pauley followed with 14 points for Waynesburg. The Raiders also received 13 points from Addonae Johnson and 10 from Kendall McKay.

Beautiful Medlen was the leading scorer for J-M with seven points.

Boys results

Avella 59, Fort Cherry 51

Cam Ullon led four Avella players in double figures with 19 points and the Eagles used two strong quarters – the second and third – to beat Fort Cherry 59-51 Saturday in the first round of the Eagles’ tournament.

Avella (7-1) will play Chartiers-Houston, a 54-38 winner over McGuffey, in the other first-round game in Monday night’s championship contest.

Fort Cherry (4-3) led 16-13 after one quarter, but Avcella (7-1) was stellar over the middle quarters, outscoring the Rangers by a 36-22 margin to take a 49-38 lead.

Brayden Fuller scored 14 points, Nate Cilia had 12 and Bruce Wright 10 for the Eagles.

Fort Cherry’s Landon Trnvasky scored a game-high 25 points and Gavin Grace had 11.

Carmichaels 59, Mapletown 15

Scott Lewis scored 12 points, leading three Carmichaels players in double figures, as the Mikes routed Mapletown 59-15 in the consolation game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament on Sunday.

Scott Maskill chipped in with 11 points and Chase Ankrom had 10 for Carmichaels (2-6), which led 16-0 after one quarter and 40-4 at halftime over the winless Maples.

Ringgold 79, Brownsville 37

Takeo Tolliver scored 16 points in Ringgold’s 79=37 thumping of Brownsville on Saturday in the Charleroi Tournament.

Dennis Hawkins added 12 points for Ringgold (7-2) and Braylen Lomax chipped in with 11.

Kaden Wimmer was the top scorer for Brownsville (0-7) with 10 points.

Riverside 77, Burgettstown 43

Riverside’s McCartney Plassmeyer poured in a game-high 29 points, leading Riverside to a 77-43 win over Burgettstown in the consolation game of the Blue Devils’ tournament on Saturday.

Cole Beckner added 12 points for Riverside (6-3).

Burgettstown (1-8) was led by Trent Stevens, who netted 14 points.

East Allegheny 78, Charleroi 49

Jayden Patterson poured in a game-high 24 points and East Allegheny defeated Charleroi on Saturday in the Cougars’ annual holiday tournament.

East Allegheny (5-2) had some hot shooting in the first half when its forged a 49-25 halftime lead.

Cedric Mack chipped in with 20 points for the Wildcats and Brian Tarrant had 13.

Charleroi (4-6) was led by Xavion Thomas’ 13 points.

Beth-Center 72, Carmichaels 38

Brayden Hull scored a game-high 21 points as Beth-Center knocked off the host Mikes, 72-38, on Saturday at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.

Also scoring in double-digits for B-C were Parker Amos (17), Jason Zellie (12) and Brayden Ozohonish (11).

Stephen Lewis topped Carmichaels (1-6) in scoring with 11 points and Scott Maskil Jr. had 10.

Jefferson-Morgan 69, Mapletown 17

The undefeated Rockets soared out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in defeating winless Mapletown 69-17 on Saturday at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.

Jeremiah Robertson and Jaymison Robinson led Jefferson-Morgan (9-0) with 16 points apiece.

Kaleb Evosevich had six points for Mapletown (0-9).

In other games

The Canon-McMillan girls routed South Park 45-25 in the Penn West California holiday event Sunday. Laurel Highlands was a 39-30 winner over Charleroi in Beth-Center’s Winter Jam tournament. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
