CANONSBURG — Good things come in small packages.

Just ask Lee Dreshman, a 107-pound wrestler for Canon-McMillan. Dreshman proved an unstoppable force in Monday’s first day of the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament at Dreshman’s home gym in Canonsburg.

He scored a late takedown for a 3-2 victory over Chris Chittum of Cleveland, Tenn., in the quarterfinals.

“I wanted to wrestle at my pace, not his,” said Dreshman, only a freshman. “That’s the first time I saw the kid.”

Dreshman fell behind 1-0 through the first two periods. But Dreshman chose neutral to start the third period and got the three-point takedown.

“He’s a tough rider on top,” said Dreshman.

“The kid is tough on top,” said C-M head coach Juordon Maier. “Our strategy is to put our wrestlers in the best position. This time it paid off for us.”

Canon-McMillan missed out on a second winner when Collier Hartman lost by 22-3 technical fall to Karson Brown of St. Edward’s (Ohio) at 139 pounds.

Dreshman started the tournament with a pin of Gavin Litz of Kiski in 3:06 and followed it up with a 19-3 technical fall over Jax Brenzet of North Allegheny in a time of 4:34. That put him in the quarterfinals against Chittum, who came into the tournament as the fifth seed. Dreshman was the fourth seed.

Dakota Carmona, a heavyweight teammate of Dreshman’s, kept his hopes alive for a third-place finish with a 12-1 major decision over Jackson Kauwell of Line Mountain.

Drake McClure lost in the round of 16 but came back to take a hard-fought 2-0 decision over Kendall Lewis of Scientific Hill, Tenn. McClure wrestled late last night to try to stay alive for third place.

Waynesburg had all five of it entries eliminated on the first day.

Trinity’s Dom Canali (127) made it to the quarterfinals with a 15-0 technical fall over Dom Cordero of Cleveland, Tenn. He found Dominic Deputy of Chestnut Ridge waiting for him there and took a 12-1 loss.

Colin Whyte of West Greene dropped a 4-2 decision at heavyweight to Cristian Alvarez of St. Joseph’s Regional of New Jersey.

Brayden Collins (215) of Canon-McMillan, saw a 13-2 lead turn to dust when he got pinned by Aiden Peterson of St.Edward’s.
