High school basketball: Defense leads Chartiers-Houston girls to section title
Chartiers-Houston won the Class 2A Section 3 girls basketball championship outright with a 57-14 thumping of Bentworth on the Bucs’ home court Wednesday night.
Chartiers-Houston (9-0, 17-4) followed a familiar script for its latest victory: a fast start on offense and relentless defense for four quarters. The Bucs led 17-3 after one quarter and 36-9 at halftime.
Allison Wingard led a balanced offense for C-H by scoring 13 points. Ava Capozzoli was next in the scoring column with 12 points.
Kayla O’Dell had seven points to lead Bentworth (3-7, 7-14).
West Greene 43, Bishop Canevin 41
West Greene used a 17-4 scoring edge in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead, then hold off Bishop Canevin down the stretch for a 43-41 win in a Class A Section 2 game.
Madelyn Roberts netted a game-high 19 points to lead West Greene (7-6, 14-7). Kendra Tharp added 11 points and Kylee Davis went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win and earn a season split with the Crusaders (5-8, 10-9).
Canevin was led by Natalie Kirsch’s 13 points.
The loss by the Crusaders keeps Avella (4-9, 9-12) alive for the final playoff berth from the section. The Eagles host West Greene on Friday night.
Trinity 56, Montour 41
Sutton Williams scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to spark Trinity to a 56-41 victory over Montour in a nonsection game.
The win evens Trinity’s record at 9-9.
The Hillers took control early, leading 17-9 after eight minutes and 30-11 at halftime.
Kimari Behrens added 15 points for Trinity and Bently Layhue chipped in with 12.
Montour is 8-12.
Belle Vernon 45, Ringgold 19
Saylor Lee had 14 points and six rebounds, powering Belle Vernon to a 45-19 home-court win over Ringgold in Class 4A Section 3.
The Leopards moved above the .500 mark in section at 7-6. They are 10-11 overall.
Emerson LaCarte added 10 points for Belle Vernon, which led 25-9 at halftime and then held Ringgold (1-12, 7-14) to two points in the third quarter.
Albert Gallatin 57, Waynesburg 26
Albert Gallatin’s Mya Glisan scored 15 points, Mikayla Shea added 11 and the Colonials defeated visiting Waynesburg 57-26 in a non-section game.
AG (8-12) led 10-6 after one quarter and 24-14 at halftime, then outscored the Raiders 12-4 in the third period.
Peyton Cowell led Waynesburg (8-11) with 12 points.
Boys results
Fort Cherry 73, Mapletown 12
Playoff-bound Fort Cherry scored 50 first-half points and rolled over winless Mapletown 73-12 in Class 2A Section 3.
The Rangers (9-4, 11-8) led 30-7 after one quarter and 50-10 at halftime. Mapletown (0-13, 0-19) scored only two points in the second half.
Fort Cherry had 12 players in the scoring column led by Shane Cornali’s 15 points in the first half.
In other games
Penn-Trafford edged Trinity 63-60 in a nonsection game played at Hiller Hall. California was a 53-35 winner at Carmichaels in a nonsection contest. No game details were reported by press time.
