High school basketball: McGuffey wins at Wash High; C-M’s Koenemund scores 35

Behind a 23-point performance by Aydan Cunningham, McGuffey won at Washington 59-36 in a Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball game Friday night.

The Highlanders (6-4, 15-6) took control in the first quarter that ended with the Highlanders on top 21-8. McGuffey led 33-15 at halftime and 48-26 after three quarters.

Tristan Reed led Wash High (3-7, 5-14) with 14 points.

Canon-McMillan 61, Connellsville 59

Roman Koenemund poured in a game-high 35 points to power Canon-McMillan to a 61-59 win at Connellsville in Class 6A Section 2.

The game was tied 30-30 at halftime and Canon-McMillan (3-11, 5-16) moved out to a one-point lead after three quarters before holding off the Falcons (0-14, 3-18) in the final eight minutes.

Blake Simmons scored 13 points for the Big Macs.

Fort Cherry 73, Carmichaels 32

Fort Cherry prepared for the upcoming playoffs with a 73-32 win over Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.

With the win, Fort Cherry (10-4, 12-8) finishes in a tie for second place in the section.

The Rangers scored 48 points in the first half against Carmichaels (4-10, 5-17) and took a 34-point lead into the intermission.

Shane Cornali led Fort Cherry in scoring with 17 points and Evan Rogers contributed 12.

Robbie Wilson-Jones was tops for the Mikes with eight points.

West Greene 64, Beth-Center 39

Lane Allison poured in a game-high 29 points and West Greene won at Beth-Center 64-39 in a game matching playoff-bound teams from Class 2A Section 3.

West Greene (10-4, 12-8) finishes in a three-way tie for second place in the section with Fort Cherry and Jefferson-Morgan. Beth-Center (6-8, 9-13) is the fifth-place finisher and gains the final postseason berth.

Matt Wassil scored 11 points for the Pioneers, who led 26-20 at halftime and pulled away with a 26-8 edge in the third quarter. Darren Knight added 10 points.

Parker Amos led B-C with 13 points.

Peters Township 54, Bethel Park 42

Peters Township defeated host Bethel Park 54-42 to end the Black Hawks’ playoff chances out of Class 5A Section 3.

The Indians improved to 9-3 in section and 15-6 overall. Bethel Park is 4-8, 7-14.

Waynesburg 76, Mount Pleasant 60

Alex Eck scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, helping Waynesburg pull away in the second half for a 76-60 win at Mount Pleasant in Class 3A Section 4.

Waynesburg led 31-29 at halftime before erupting for 27 points in the third quarter.

Cole Headlee had 17 points and seven assists for the Raiders and Jack Ricciuti added 10 points.

Cole Massari flipped in 21 points for Mount Pleasant.

Ligonier Valley 65, Charleroi 48

Michael Wisniewski led three Ligonier Valley players in double figures with a game-high 19 points en route to a 65-48 win over host Charleroi in a battle of playoff teams out of Class 3A Section 4.

Ligonier Valley (7-3, 13-8) rode a big first half that ended with the victors leading 37-18. Parker Hollick finished with 18 points and Brian Wisniewski had 16.

Charleroi (4-6, 10-11) received 13 points from Jackson Keranko.

Bentworth 58, Frazier 44

Chris Harper and Ben Hays combined for 44 points as Bentworth erased a halftime deficit and beat Frazier 58-44 in Class 2A Section 1.

Harper led the Bearcats (7-6, 10-9) with 23 points and Hays was close behind in the scoring column with 21 points. Lucas Burt gave Bentworth three players in double figures as he scored 10.

Bentworth trailed 27-22 at halftime but won by holding Frazier to 17 points in the second half.

Burgettstown 71, Mapletown 47

Burgettstown outscored host Mapletown 27-9 in the first quarter and went on to a 71-47 victory in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

Blake Neal led the Burgettstown attack with 18 points and Sam Elich followed with 16 as the Blue Devils improved to 3-11 in section and 6-15 overall.

Lucas Stevenson scored a game-high 19 points for Mapletown (0-14, 0-20).

Girls results

Peters Township 44, Bethel Park 40

Peters Township erased a five-point deficit after three quarters and rallied to beat host Bethel Park 44-40 to finish undefeated in Class 5A Section 4 play.

PT (12-0, 19-2) trailed 36-31 after Bethel Park’s Sadie Orie made a three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer. The Indians, however, outscored the Black Hawks 13-4 in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Bri Morreale led PT in scoring with 14 points and Daniela Radulovich followed with 12.

Chartiers-Houston 50, Jefferson-Morgan 10

Class 2A Section 3 champion Chartiers-Houston also finished unbeaten in league play after defeating host Jefferson-Morgan 50-10.

The Bucs finish section play at 10-0 and are 18-4 overall.

C-H led 26-8 at halftime, then held Jefferson-Morgan scoreless in the third quarter and two two points in the second half.

Ava Capazzoli and Allison Wingard each scored 13 points to lead the Bucs.

J-M’s Bailey Cervone had seven points.
