High school notebook: Cunningham and Woods eclipse 1,000 points
Two local basketball players, Washington’s Olivia Woods and McGuffey’s Aydan Cunningham, hit the 1,000-point milestone one day apart last week.
Woods did so with a game-high 21 points Monday in a loss for the Lady Prexies against McGuffey.
On Tuesday, Cunningham hit the 1,000 point-mark for his career in a 63-42 victory over Sto-Rox.
Cunningham had 24 points in the victory over the Vikings, continuing what has been an impressive final year for the Highlanders.
A 6-5 forward, Cunningham had averaged 22.4 points per game this season entering Friday’s Class 3A Section 2 finale at Washington.
Cunningham is the second McGuffey basketball player to reach 1,000 points this season.
Taylor Schumacher, a senior on the Highlanders’ girls team, achieved the milestone in December.
Woods, a senior, has been a top scorer in most games for Washington this season. She had 17 in a loss to Keystone Oaks on Thursday and 23 Saturday in a victory over Monessen.
Cal commits
Jefferson-Morgan’s Houston Guesman and Washington’s Karzell Daugherty were part of the 2025 California football recruiting class that was announced Wednesday.
Guesman is listed as a wide receiver by Cal, but had a memorable final season at quarterback for the Rockets, leading them to a Tri-County South Conference title and a 10-0 regular season.
He rushed and passed for more than 1,000 yards, becoming the first Rockets quarterback to do so.
Daugherty is a 6-3, 245-pound offensive lineman.
He played center, guard, defensive end and defensive tackle for the Prexies.
Wade to Ohio Dominican
Belle Vernon’s Alonzo Wade is headed to Ohio Dominican to continue his football career.
He’s listed on the Ohio Dominican recruiting class as a defensive back.
Wade missed time due to injury this season for the Leopards. He had 17 tackles and five passes defensed.
Ohio Dominican is located in Columbus. The Panthers play in NCAA Division II in the Great Midwest Athletics Conference.
Goggins off to Fairmont State
Ringgold’s Keyshawn Goggins was part of the Fairmont State recruiting class that was announced Wednesday.
Goggins committed to the Eagles on Feb. 1 just days before the late signing period.
He was listed by Fairmont State as a defensive lineman, but he also played running back and wideout for the Rams this fall.
Fairmont State is in the NCAA Division II Mountain East Conference.
