High school basketball: Mohawk stymies Waynesburg in 3A playoffs
Junior guard Bobby Fadden scored a game-high 27 points and third-seeded Mohawk’s defense shut down Waynesburg over the final three quarters to beat the Raiders 59-40 in a Class 3A first-round boys basketball playoff game Tuesday night.
Mohawk (18-5) was locked in a 13-13 tie after Waynesburg’s Austin Surber made a long three-pointer at the buzzer to end the opening quarter. The Warriors, however, held Waynesburg (9-14) to six points in each of the next two quarters and opened up a 13-point lead heading into the final eight minutes. Fadden made a three-pointer to end the third with Mohawk on top 38-25.
Alex Eck was the leading scorer for the Raiders with 12 points. Cole Headlee added 11 and Dane Woods had 10.
Most of Mohawk’s scoring was done by three players. In addition to Fadden’s big game, Drew Wrona had 17 points and Joey Nail added 11.
Mars 50, South Fayette 46
Mars outscored South Fayette 12-7 in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 50-46 victory in a Class 5A first-round playoff game played on the Lions’ home floor.
South Fayette (15-8) led 16-6 after one quarter but Mars started its comeback before halftime, using an 18-9 scoring edge in the second quarter to close to within 25-24 at the intermission. South Fayette maintained a one-point lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Mars advances to the quarterfinals with a 13-10 record.
Ben Detisch led the Fightin’ Planets with 19 points. Stefano Vezio scored 19 for South Fayette.
Girls results
Laurel 44, Beth-Center 32
Maelee Hill scored 16 points, Shyan Tindall added 15 on five three-point field goals and Laurel defeated Beth-Center 44-32 in a Class 2A first-round game played on the Spartans’ home court.
Laurel (10-13) stretched its winning streak to three games despite Beth-Center’s Violet Trump scoring a game-high 18 points.
The game was close throughout with Laurel holding leads of 10-7, 20-16 and 31-24 at the quarter stops. Tindall made a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter and give the Spartans some margin for error.
Beth-Center ends the season with a 13-9 record.
Aliquippa 79, Carmichaels 6
Carla Brown scored 33 points – all in the first half – and second-seeded Aliquippa rolled over visiting Carmichaels 79-6 in a Class 2A first-round playoff game.
Aliquippa (17-4) led 28-0 after one quarter and scored the game’s first 57 points. The first half ended with the Quips leading, 57-1.
Carmichaels’ season ends with a 3-19 record.
Winchester Thurston 62, Burgettstown 28
Sky Still led five players in double figures with 13 points for third-seeded Winchester Thurston in a win over No. 14 Burgettstown (8-14) in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
DaShae Cochran , Aleah Cooper, Alexis Bansah and Marteece Williams scored 10 points each for the Bears (20-3).
Savanna Rush finished with 11 points for the Blue Devils.
In other games
South Allegheny, the No. 2 seed in Class 3A Boys, was a 61-32 winner over visiting Charleroi in a first-round game. Charleroi ends the season with a 10-12 record.
