High school basketball: PT’s win creates logjam at top of section
Nick McCullough scored 17 points to lead Peters Township to a 62-50 victory over South Fayette on Tuesday night in a key Class 5A Section 3 game at AHN Arena.
It was the first loss in section play for South Fayette (4-1, 7-4). Peters Township improved to 3-1, 9-3. Baldwin also entered Tuesday with one section loss.
The Indians led 27-24 at halftime and pulled away in the second half. PT led 44-37 after three quarters.
Fort Cherry 47, Jefferson-Morgan 43
Don’t count out Fort Cherry in Class 2A Section 3.
The defending section champion and state semifinalists rallied in the fourth quarter for a 47-43 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan, which entered the night unbeaten in section play.
Jefferson-Morgan (4-1, 8-3) led 37-30 entering the fourth quarter but Fort Cherry (3-2, 5-6) held a 17-6 scoring edge over the final eight minutes.
Shane Cornali scored 19 points to fuel the Rangers’ comeback.He also grabbed 22 rebounds. Matt Sieg had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Houston Guesman had 11 points for J-M.
Charleroi 60, Mount Pleasant 44
Charleroi used a balanced offensive attack and defeated host Mount Pleasant 60-44 in Class 3A Section 4.
The Cougars (1-1, 7-6) were in control throughout, racing out to a 20-11 lead at the end of one quarter. Mount Pleasant closed to within 27-23 at halftime, but Charleroi held a 19-8 scoring edge in the pivotal third quarter.
Braedon Todaro led the Cougars with 16 points, Brock Henderson had 14 and Shea Smith tallied 12.
Mount Pleasant (0-3, 0-12) had 12 points from Cole Massari.
Monessen 74, Environmental Chartier 33
Devontae Robinson and Jaekwon Cragette each scored 14 points, leading four Monessen players in double figures as the Greyhounds rolled over visiting Environmental Charter 74-33 in Class A Section 2.
It was the first section win for Monessen (1-2, 6-4). The Greyhounds led 46-26 at halftime and then held Environmental Charter (0-3, 0-7) to seven points in the second half.
Rodney Johnson and Dennis Hawkins each finished with 13 points for Monessen.
Belle Vernon 85, East Allegheny 60
Zion Moore and Tommy Davis combined for 45 points as Belle Vernon won at East Allegheny, 85-60, in Class 4A Section 3.
Moore had a game-high 25 points and Davis followed with 20. Trevor Kovatch added 13 points to give the Leopards (4-1, 9-4) three players in double figures. Davis also grabbed 14 rebounds.
Cedric Machi led East Allegheny (0-4, 3-9) with 20 points.
Southmoreland 72, Waynesburg 62
Noah Felenter scored 24 points to power visiting Southmoreland to a 72-62 win over Waynesburg.
Ty Whork scored 15 points for the Scottiers, Brady Sherbondy had 12 and Stanley Charman 11.
Waynesburg was led by Cole Headlee’s 18 points. Alex VanSickle was right behind with 17 points and Alex Eck had 10.
Baldwin 72, Ringgold 29
Baldwin remained at the top of the Class 5A Section 3 standings along with South Fayette and Peters Township by rolling over Ringgold 72-29.
In other games
Hempfield was a 66-47 winner on its home court over Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.
Girls results
McGuffey 52, Waynesburg 34
Lexi Ewig and Taylor Schumacher combined for 30 points, powering McGuiffey to a 52-34 home-court win over Waynesburg in a key Class 3A Section 3 game.
McGuffey had two big quarters – the second and fourth – that enabled the Highlanders to improve to 3-1 in section and 8-4 overall. McGuffey held a one-point lead after one quarter and outscored Waynesburg (2-2, 6-4) 18-6 in the second quarter. Waynesburg cut McGuffey’s lead to 30-25 entering the fourth quarter, when the Highlanders pulled away with a 22-9 scoring edge.
Ewig had 15 points and six steals, and Schumacher contributed 15 points and six rebounds.
Waynesburg’s Avery Davis poured in a game-high 21 points.
Peters Township 61, Albert Gallatin 29
Natalie Wetzel scored 21 points as Peters Township remained unbeaten in Class 5A Section 4 play with an easy 61-29 win over visiting Albert Gallatin.
Bri Morreale added 13 points for the Indians, who are 4-0 in section and 11-1 overall.
Clairton 83, Avella 41
Iyanna Wade scored 54 points and Clairton remained undefeated in Class A Section 2 games by defeating visiting Avella, 83-41.
Almost all of the offensive production from Avella (2-3, 6-6) came from two players as Ava Frank and Sydney Strope each tossed in 19 points.
Fort Cherry 60, Burgettstown 41
Fort Cherry dominated the middle 16 minutes and it led to a 60-41 victory over visiting Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 2 game Monday.
Fort Cherry (3-0, 10-2), increased its winning streak to eight games. The Rangers led 11-7 after one quarter, then outscored Burgettstown 41-18 over the second and third quarters.
Brook Cornali scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Rangers. Olivia Kemp followed with 16.
Savanna Rush had 14 points for Burgettstown (1-2, 4-9).
In other games
Canon-McMillan picked up its third win in four games, a 51-32 victory at Hempfield in Class 6A Section 2. The Big Macs are 2-1 in section and 7-5 overall. No game details were reported.
