High school basketball: Chartiers-Houston boys stay atop section, stop B-C

Chartiers-Houston used some outside forces on offense and solid defense in the second half to beat visiting Beth-Center 61-45 in a game matching contenders in Class 2A Section 3 Thursday night.

The win improves Chartiers-Houston to 4-1 in section and 10-2 overall. The Bucs have won eight of their last nine.

Beth-Center slips to 3-2, 6-5.

Chartiers-Houston, Jefferson-Morgan and West Greene all enter Friday night with one section loss, with B-C a game behind in the loss column.

The Bucs took control early against the Bulldogs, forging a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. C-H led 37-26 at halftime and 47-33 after three quarters.

Nate Gregory led four C-H players in scoring with 20 points and Justus Buckingham followed with 16. Gregory and Buckingham each made four three-point field goals. Aaron Walsh and Paul Williams had 10 points apiece.

Jason Zellie led B-C with 15 points, Parker Amos had 12 and Brayden Hull 11.

Girls results

Peters Township 62, Uniontown 21

Natalie Wetzel led four Peters Township players in double figures with 19 points and the Class 5A Section 4-leading Indians rolled to a 62-21 win at Uniontown.

The win improved PT’s records to 5-0 in the section and 12-1 overall.

Bri Morreale had 11 points, and Jordyn Welsh and Taylor McCullough each scored 10 for the Indians, who play a key section game at home Tuesday against Bethel Park.

Uniontown is 1-4 in section and 4-8 overall.

Trinity 48, Albert Gallatin 43

Kimari Behrens scored 17 points and Trinity held off Albert Gallatin 48-43 in a Class 5A Section 4 game played on the Colonials’ home court.

Trinity (2-3, 7-4) led 23-18 at halftime and fought off a comeback attempt by AG (0-6, 4-7).

Riley Venick chipped in with 12 points for the Hillers.

AG’s Mya Glisan scored a game-high 19 points and Grace Panos had 12.

Fort Cherry 68, Northgate 3

Class 2A Section 2 leader Fort Cherry rolled over winless Northgate 68-3 on the Flames’ home court.

The win was the ninth in a row for Fort Cherry (4-0, 11-2). The Rangers led 23-2 after one quarter and 46-3 at halftime. Northgate (0-3, 0-12) did not score in the second half.

Brooke Cornali had 21 points to lead FC’s scoring. Jazlyn Martino tossed in 11 points.

McGuffey 57, Washington 50

Taylor Schumacher poured in a game-high 31 points as McGuffey won a key Class 3A Section 3 game over host Washington, 57-50.

McGuffey (4-1, 9-4) had a 14-point lead after the first quarter, but Washington (1-4, 4-8) trimmed the gap to 32-25 at halftime. The Highlanders pulled away again, leading 52-37 after three quarters. The Prexies had a 13-5 scoring edge in the final quarter.

In addition to her scoring, Schumacher grabbed seven rebounds. Teammate Lexi Ewig had nine points and six assists.

Olivia Woods led three Wash High players in double figures with 23 points. Kayli Winn finished with 12 points and Kyndra Winn had 10.

Keystone Oaks 48, Waynesburg 33

Keystone Oaks pulled away in the fourth quarter for a key 48-33 win over host Waynesburg in Class 3A Section 3.

KO (3-1, 9-1) led 23-20 at halftime and 28-27 after three quarters but outscored the Raiders 20-6 over the final eight minutes.

Laney Wagner played a huge role for the Golden Eagles, scoring a game-high 24 points that included five three-point field goals.

Avery Davis led Waynesburg (2-3, 6-5) by scoring 22 points.

Bishop Canevin 54, Avella 37

Isabella Sysak flipped in a game-high 26 points to power Bishop Canevin to a 54-37 victory over Avella in a Class A Section 2 game played on the Eagles’ home court.

Bishop Canevin (2-3, 6-4) led 36-27 after three quarters and pulled away over the final eight minutes.

Ave Frank had a big game for Avella (2-4, 6-7), scoring 20 points. Syd Strope followed with 10.

Geibel Catholic 50, Monessen 25

High-scoring Emma Larkin tossed in 26 points, sparking Geibel Catholic to a 50-25 win at Monessen in Class A Section 2.

Mallory Clemmer added 14 points for the Gators, who are 4-1 in section and 11-1 overall. Gweibel led 22-3 after one quarter.

All of Monessen’s scoring was done by two players: Madison Johnson had 13 points and Na’jaziah Carter had 12. The Greyhounds are 1-5 in section and 3-7 overall.

Brentwood 45, Burgettstown 39

Paige Boehm scored 16 points, leading Brentwood to its first Class 2A Section 2 victory, 45-39, at Burgettstown.

The game was close throughout with Brentwood (1-2, 3-6) leading 22-18 at halftime and 34-26 after three quarters.

Paige Klowdowski was the leading scorer for Burgettstown (1-3, 4-10) with 13 points.

Chartiers-Houston 58, Carmichaels 17

Chartiers-Houston became the last team unbeaten in Class 2A Section 3 play when it defeated Carmichaels 59-17 on the Bucs’ home court.

C-H (3-0, 9-1) won its fifth straight and wasted no time in doing so, building a 30-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Ava Capozolli led the Bucs in scoring with 19 points. Ava Kolovich followed with 16 points and Allison Wingard finished with 14. Wingard had 10 of her points in the first quarter and Kolovich tossed in nine.

Carmichaels is 0-4, 0-12.

Beth-Center 49, Bentworth 35

Callie Dorsey scored 14 points, Violet Trump added 11 and Beth-Center defeated Bentworth 49-35, the first loss in Class 2A Section 3 play for the Bearcats.

Bentworth (2-1, 6-6) lost for only the second time in six games. Bella Moyer led the Bearcats with 10 points.

Beth-Center (3-1, 8-5) won its third straight.

Belle Vernon 41, Mount Pleasant 18

Belle Vernon had no trouble climbing to the .500 mark in Class 4A Section 3, cruising to a 41-18 win over visiting Mount Pleasant.

Saylor Lee scored 13 points and Aubrey Brown had 11 points and seven steals for the Leopards (3-3,. 5-8).

Raleigh Drazal scored 11 for Mount Pleasant (1-5, 1-11), which was held to three points in the first half.
