High School Basketball: Surging Fort Cherry clips West Greene
Fort Cherry finished strong, outscoring West Greene by 12 points in the fourth quarter on its way to a 55-42 victory in Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball action Friday night.
Shane Cornali had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Rangers (4-2, 6-6) and Evan Rogers scored 10 points. The Rangers have won four in a row.
The Rangers led by five at halftime, but the Pioneers cut the lead to one with a 15-11 advantage in the third quarter.
Parker Burns led West Greene (4-2, 6-6) with 16 points and Lane Allison scored 11.
South Fayette 51, Trinity 37
Gavin Orosz scored 19 points and South Fayette shut down Trinity in the second half for a 51-37 victory in a Class 5A Section 3 game played on the Lions’ home court.
The win keeps South Fayette (5-1, 8-4) atop the tightly packed section. Trinity slips to 1-5, 6-5.
The Lions led 24-22 at halftime but pulled away in the second half, outsourcing Trinity 16-8 in the third quarter and 11-7 over the final eight minutes.
Tyson Wright also scored in double figures for South Fayette, finishing with 12 points.
Trinity’s Jacob Dunkle shared game scoring honors with Orosz by scoring 19 points.
Peters Township 75, Ringgold 40
Peters Township outscored host Ringgold 19-2 in the pivotal second quarter and went on to a 75-40 victory in Class 5A Section 3.
Peters Township (4-1, 10-3), which has won four in a row, led 20-11 after one quarter and broke the game open with the big second quarter that led to a 39-13 halftime lead.
Dylan Donovan led the Indians’ attack with 18 points, Sean Thelk added 14 and Nick McCullough had 12.
Braylen Lomax and Takeo Tolliver each scored 10 points for Ringgold (0-4, 3-8).
Charleroi 66, Brownsville 31
Charleroi avenged an earlier loss to Brownsville in nonsection play by beating the Falcons 66-31 in a Class 3A Section 4 game.
The Cougars (2-1, 8-6) took charge from the outset, building a 17-2 lead after one quarter and stretching the advantage to 39-17 at halftime and 60-25 at the end of three quarters.
Brock Henderson and Jackson Keranoko did the most damage for the Cougars by scoring 15 points apiece. Amaru Staub tossed in 10 points.
Jaiden Braster led Brownsville (1-2, 3-10) in scoring with 12 points.
Chartiers-Houston 77, Mapletown 33
Chartiers-Houston scored 53 points in the first half and won its fifth consecutive game, 77-33, at winless Mapletown in Class 2A Section 3.
Nate Gregory led the Bucs with 20 points and Aaron Walsh finished with 11. C-H led 53-18 at halftime.
Lucas Stevenson scored 13 points and Tyler Howard had 10 for Mapletown (0-6, 0-11).
Aquinas Academy 91, Avella 72
If you like points, Avella was the place to be Friday night.
Sam Duer and David Zaharko combined for 52 points as Aquinas Academy defeated Avella 91-72 in a Class A Section 1 game.
Duer scored 27 points and Zaharko had 25, which included five three-point baskets. Jonah Burchill added 16 points and Jake Guillen had 14 as Aquinas Academy (4-0, 12-1) raced to a 52-31 halftime lead.
Avella (1-17-5) scored 41 points in the second half. Nate Cilia paced the Eagles with 20 points, Bryce Wright had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Brayden Fuller pumped in 11.
Waynesburg 68, Ligonier Valley 52
Alex VanSickle led four Waynesburg players in double figures with 23 points, Alex Eck and Dane Woods each had a double-double and Waynesburg defeated Ligonier Valley 68-52 in Class 3A Section 4.
Eck scored 19 points and collected 14 rebounds while Woods had 14 points to go with 11 rebounds. Cole Headlee added 12 points for the Raiders (2-1, 2-8).
Parker Hollick led LV (1-2, 6-6) with 21 points.
Monessen 68, St. Joseph 47
Monessen made sure that the long trek to Natrona Heights to play St. Joseph was worthwhile.
TyVaughn Kershaw and Jay’Veyon Jeffries had 16 points each to guide the Greyhounds (2-2, 7-4) past the Spartans (2-2, 6-6) in a Class A, Section 2 game.
The two schools are separated by 57 miles.
Devontae Robinson chipped in 10 points for the Greyhounds.
Ben Bartolivic paced St. Joseph with 17 points and Ryan McCarthy scored 12.
Belle Vernon 65, Greensburg Salem 28
Belle Vernon raced out to a 17-1 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a Class 4A, Section victory over Greensburg Salem (2-3, 3-8).
The Leopards (5-1, 10-4) have won four consecutive games.
Zion Moore led the Leopards with 23 points. Tommy Davis had 21 points and nine rebounds.
Luke Rullo had five points for the Golden Lions.
Jefferson-Morgan 64, Carmichaels 33
Jeremiah Robertson led three Jefferson-Morgan players in double figures with 16 points in a Class 2A, Section 3 win over Carmichaels (2-4, 3-8).
Jase Bedillion contributed 15 points for the Rockets (5-1, 9-3) and John Woodward scored 11.
After a tight first quarter that ended, 18-15, the Rockets took control of the game with a 19-7 margin in the second quarter and followed that up with a 19-4 advantage in the third.
Robbie Wilson-Jones had 10 points for the Mikes.

In a pair of Class 3A Section 2 games, McGuffey won at Sto-Rox 55-38 and Carlynton slipped past host Washington, 59-52. Norwin defeated visiting Canon-McMillan 68-56 in Class 6A Section 2.
Girls Basketball
Geibel Catholic 59, Mapletown 22
Emma Larkin had 27 points and made four 3-pointers for Geibel Catholic (5-1, 12-1) in a Class A, Section 2 win over Mapletown (0-6, 2-12).
Janiah Darnell added 10 points for the Gators, who led 24-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Makenna Lotspeich led the Maples with 10 points.
Norwin 56, Canon-McMillan 40
Bella Furno scored 14 points to lead Norwin (3-1, 6-5) past Canon-McMillan (2-2, 7-6) in Class 6A, Section 2 action.
Kendall Berger finished with 10 points for the Knights.
Madison Clair had 12 points for the Big Macs.
Aquinas Academy 43, Chartiers-Houston 41
Becca Guillen scored a game-high 16 points and Aquinas Academy (7-4) edged Chartiers-Houston (9-2) in a nonsection game.
The game was tied 21-21 at halftime. A 14-10 advantage in the third quarter by the Crusaders turned out to be the difference.
Aly Wingard led the Bucs with 13 points and Ella Richey scored 10.
Elliot Keverline finished with 11 points for the Crusaders.
