High school basketball: Chartiers-Houston girls remain perfect in section play
Ava Kolovich had one of her best games of the season, scoring 19 points and sparking Class 2A Section 3 leader Chartiers-Houston to a 48-21 girls basketball victory over host Bentworth Monday night.
The win makes Chartiers-Houston 3-0 in section play and 9-2 overall. Bentworth slipped to 2-2 in section and 6-7 overall.
The Bucs took control of the game early, forging leads of 16-6 after one quarter and 34-11 at halftime. Ava Capozzoli had 12 points for C-H.
Kayla O’Dell led Bentworth in scoring with nine points.
Trinity 73, Uniontown 18
Trinity climbed to the .500 mark in section play with a 73-18 thumping of Uniontown at Hiller Hall.
Trinity is 3-3 in Class 5A Section 4 and 8-4 overall. Uniontown falls to 1-5, 4-9. The Red Raiders have lost five in a row.
The Hillers used a balanced attack on offense, which was led by Sutton Williamson and Bently Layhue. Each player scored 15 points. Vitt Emerich added 11 points.
Trinity led 18-3 after one quarter and 42-10 at halftime.
Seton LaSalle 54, McGuffey 38
Seton LaSalle remained in sole possession of first place in Class 3A Section 3 with a 54-38 win over McGuffey in a game played on the Highlanders’ home court.
Seton LaSalle (6-0, 10-3) used balanced scoring and a strong first half to win the game. The Rebels led 28-14 at halftime.
Tiara Curry led three Seton LaSalle players in double figures with 14 points. Natalie Pascarella followed with 13 points and Addie Lonergan had 12.
Taylor Schumacher tossed in 14 points for McGuffey (4-2), 9-5), which was trying to move into a tie for first place in the section.
Waynesburg 55, Charleroi 33
Avery Davis and Peyton Cowell combined for 35 points, sparking Waynesburg to a 55-33 road win over Charleroi in Class 3A Section 3.
Davis scored a game-high 18 points on nine field goals and Cowell was close behind with 17 points. Mya Smith gave Waynesburg three players in double figures by scoring 10.
The Raiders (3-3, 8-5) forged a 34-15 lead by halftime.
Eden Smith tallied 12 points and Emma Skobel had 10 for Charleroi (0-6, 0-15).
Carmichaels 38, Jefferson-Morgan 32
KeLani Chun scored 15 points and Carmichaels picked up its first victory of the season, 38-32, over rival Jefferson-Morgan in a Class 2A Section 3 game played on the Mikes’ home court.
The Mikes (1-4, 1-12) led 20-14 at halftime and 31-24 after three quarters.
J-M’s Brelynn Wood matched Chun for game scoring honors with her 15 points. The Rockets’ records fell to 0-4, 1-12.
Belle Vernon 48, Southmoreland 20
Aubrey Brown had a double-double, sparking Belle Vernon to a 48-20 win over Southmoreland in Class 4A Section 3.
Brown’s big game included 17 points and 15 rebounds. Saylor Lee scored 14 points for the Leopards (4-3, 6-8).
Southmoreland is 1-6 in section and 3-11 overall.
Keystone Oaks 65, Washington 32
Keystone Oaks remained on the heels of Seton LaSalle in Class 3A Section 3 by defeating visiting Washington, 65-32.
The Golden Eagles (4-1, 10-1) put four players in double figures, led by Laney Wagner with 16 points. Payton Jamilton had 14 points, Hannah York 11 and Kailyn Brannon 10.
Washington’s Olivia Woods poured in a game-high 20 points. The Prexies slipped to 1-5 in section and 4-9 overall.
West Greene 72, Avella 41
West Greene broke open a close Class A Section 2 game scoring 28 points in the third quarter and went on to a 72-41 victory over visiting Avella.
Kendra Tharp and Madelyn Roberts led a trio of double-digit scorers for West Greene (3-2, 8-2) with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Kylee Davis added 10 points.
Ava Frank scored 18 points to lead Avella, with 15 of the points coming in the first half. After West Greene opened the game on an 18-5 run, Avella pulled to within three at 23-20 before the Pioneers ended the first half on a 13-5 spurt to take an 11-point (36-25) lead at the half.
Roberts and Tharp each scored 10 points in the decisive third quarter, in which West Greene held a 28-11 scoring edge.
In other games
Clairton remained unbeaten in Class A Section 2 play with a 91-57 win over visiting Monessen. Mount Pleasant defeated Ringgold 51-32 in a Class 4A Section 3 game played on the Vikings’ home court. Beth-Center won 45-28 at California in Class 2A Section 3. Bishop Canevin was a 53-26 winner over visiting Mapletown in Class A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.

Belle Vernon 90, West Mifflin 60
Zion Moore and Trevor Kovatch combined for 47 points as Belle Vernon defeated West Mifflin 90-60 in a Class 4A Section 3.
The Leopards improved to 6-1 in Class 4A Section 3 and 11-4 overall. They have won five in a row.
Curtis Wade chipped in with 12 points as Belle Vernon scored 56 points in the first half. Moo0re also had seven assists.
Daven Reynolds led West Mifflin (2-4, 3-12) in scoring with 16 points.
