High school basketball: C-H wins battle for 1st place; Trinity rallies for win
Nate Gregory led four Chartiers-Houston players in double figures with 13 points and the Bucs defeated visiting Jefferson-Morgan 55-38 Tuesday night in a game for first place in Class 2A Section 3.
Chartiers-Houston (6-1, 12-2) took control of the game early, building leads of 14-6 after one quarter and 21-11 at halftime.
Aaron Walsh and Justus Buckingham each tossed in 12 points for the Bucs, who held a scoring edge in each quarter. Jake Perchinsky had 10 points.
Dayten Marion paced Jefferson-Morgan (5-2, 9-4) with 12 points and Houston Guesman had 10.
Trinity 67, Ringgold 63
Trinity mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to beat Ringgold 67-63 in a Class 5A Section 3 game.
Ringgold (0-4, 3-8), behind Szyair Dungee’s 23 points that included five three-point baskets, led the entire way until Trinity’s Max Diesel connected on a three-pointer in the final minute that gave the Hillers a 65-63 advantage. Trinity (2-4, 7-5) sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
Jacob Dunkle had a double-double for the Hillers, scoring a game-high 31 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jonah Williamson tossed in 22 points.
Ringgold’s Demitri Lowe and Xavier Thomas each had 16 points. The Rams led 56-49 after three quarters.
Fort Cherry 60, Carmichaels 41
Shane Cornali scored a game-high 17 points and Fort Cherry broke open a close game in the second quarter and went on to a 60-41 victory over host Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.
The win was the fifth in a row for Fort Cherry (5-2, 7-6), which plays a key section game Friday at Chartiers-Houston.
The Rangers led 10-4 after one quarter and then outscored Carmichaels 24-12 in the second quarter to open an 18-point halftime lead.
Evan Rogers finished with 15 points for the Rangers and Jack Kitzmiller had 10.
Carmichaels (2-5, 3-9), which closed to within a dozen at the end of the third quarter, was led by Robbie Wilson-Jones’ 13 points. Dayton Reynolds scored 11 points.
West Greene 59, Beth-Center 55
Lane Allison and Landen Hill each scored 15 points and West Greene withstood Beth-Center’s long-range shooting to beat the visiting Bulldogs 59-55 in Class 2A Section 3.
West Greene (5-2, 7-6) had to rally in the second half as Beth-Center (4-3, 7-6) led 36-31 at halftime. West Greene held an 18-11 scoring edge in the third quarter to forge a two-point lead and then held Beth-Center to eight points in the fourth quarter.
Patrick Durbin gave West Greene three players in double figures as he finished with 11 points.
Jason Zellie scored a game-high 24 points for B-C and Brayden Hull added 20. Both players made five three-point field goals. The Bulldogs made 11 three-pointers in the game, including nine in the first half.
Peters Township 61, Bethel Park 60, OT
Mickey Vaccarello scored eight of his 14 points in overtime as Peters Township outlasted visiting Bethel Park 61-60 in Class 5A Section 3.
The Indians outscored Bethel park 11-10 in the extra session but could have made it easier on themselves. PT missed five free throws in the overtime.
Sean Thelk led PT (5-1, 11-3) in scoring with 17 points. Dylan Donovan finished with 13.
Jack Bruckner led Bethel Park (2-4, 5-8) with 16 points, including eight in the overtime. Mike Brucker had 11.
Monessen 71, Geibel Catholic 61
Rodney Johnson scored 23 points and Monessen pulled out a 71-61 victory over visiting Geibel catholic in a Class A Section 2 game.
The game was tied 26-26 at halftime and Johnson tossed in 13 of his points in the third quarter that ended with Monessen ahead 43-41. The Greyhounds (3-2, 8-4) outscored Geibel 28-20 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Monessen’s TyVoughn Kershaw had 16 points and Jayveyon Jeffries 12.
Evan Strimel’s 15 points led three players in double figures for Geibel (2-3, 7-6).
Burgettstown 77, Mapletown 50
Colton County led three Burgettstown players in double figures with 14 points and the Blue Devils defeated visiting Mapletown 77-50 in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Burgettstown (1-6, 4-10) led 26-10 after one quarter, 44-22 at halftime and cruised from that point.
Parker Rommes scored 13 points and J.T. Newark had 10 for the Blue Devils.
Mapletown’s Lucas Stevenson scored a game-high 26 points that included five three-point field goals. Carson Vanata had 14 points for the Maples (0-7, 0-12).
Canon-McMillan 64, Connellsville 54
Michael Detrich poured in a game-high 28 points, sparking Canon-McMillan to a 64-54 home-court win over Connellsville in Class 6A Section 2.
Roman Koenemund added 18 points for the Big Macs (1-6, 3-10).
Girls results
Peters Township 55, Bethel Park 35
Daniela Radulovich scored 14 points and Peters Township ran its winning streak to seven games with a 55-35 victory over visiting Bethel Park in a Class 5A Section 4 game.
The section-leading Indians ran their record to 6-0 in the league and 13-1 overall.
The Indians played strong defense throughout the game, holding Bethel Park (3-3, 6-8) to 12 points in the first half. PT led 23-12 at the break and pulled away over the final 16 minutes.
Natalie Wetzel scored 14 points for the Indians.

Canon-McMillan improved to 3-2 in Class 6A Section 2 (8-6 overall) with a 59-22 victory over Connellsville. No game details were reported.
