High school basketball: Dunkle scores 25 as Trinity gets 2nd win over Bethel Park

Jonah Williamson gave Trinity a good start, and Jacob Dunkle and Anthony Giorgi made sure the Hillers stayed in front all night.

Dunkle scored 25 points to lead Trinity to a 58-45 victory over Bethel Park in a key Class 5A Section 3 game Friday night at Hiller Hall.

It was the second win of the season for Trinity (3-4, 8-5) over Bethel Park (2-5, 5-9). The Hillers won at BP in December.

The Hillers led wire-to-wire this time. Williamson scored 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter as Trinity forged an 18-9 lead.

Giorgi helped the Hillers to a 30-24 halftime lead and a 43-35 edge after three quarters. Giorgi, who entered the game averaging only four points per game, had a breakout night, scoring 16 points.

Dunkle led the way for Trinity, scoring a game-high 25 points. Trinity ended the game on a 7-0 run with four of those coming on a pair of dunks by Dunkle.

Tanner Pfeuffrer’s 16 points led Bethel Park.

Jefferson-Morgan 52, Burgettstown 41

Dayten Marion scored a game-high 18 points and Jefferson-Morgan overcame a halftime deficit and charged from behind to beat host Burgettstown 52-41 in Class 2A Section 3.

Burgettstown (1-7, 4-11) led 30-24 at halftime, but Jefferson-Morgan (6-2, 10-4) used a 14-4 scoring edge in the pivotal third quarter to storm back for a 38-34 lead. The Rockets held the Blue Devils to seven points in the fourth quarter.

John Woodward scored 11 points for J-M.

Parker Rommes led Burgettstown with 12 points while Sam Elich and Colton County each tossed in 11.

West Greene 74, Carmichaels 45

Lane Allison scored a game-high 23 points, Patrick Durbin had 15 and West Greene remained on the heels of the Class 2A Section 3 leaders with a 74-45 home-court win over Carmichaels.

The Pioneers improved to 6-2 in the section and 8-6 overall. They have won three of their last four.

West Greene led 18-9 after one quarter and moved out to a 44-19 edge at halftime. Parker Burns tossed in 13 points for the Pioneers and Darren Knight scored 10 points to give West Greene four players in double figures.

Scott Maskil tossed in 12 points for Carmichaels (2-6, 3-10), which will play a makeup game Monday at McGuffey.

Beth-Center 65, Mapletown 29

Parker Amos and Jason Zellie combined for 36 points as Beth-Center stopped a two-game skid with a 65-29 home-court win over winless Mapletown in Class 2A Section 3.

Amos led the Bulldogs (5-3, 8-7) by tossing in 19 points. Zellie had 17 as Beth-Center forged a 38-16 halftime lead.

Mapletown is 0-8 in section and 0-13 overall.

Imani Christian 82, Canon-McMillan 43

R.J. Sledge led five Imani Christian players in double figures with 14 points in an 82-43 victory at Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 2.

Imani Christian (6-2, 8-5), which was placed on probation for one year by the WPIAL earlier this week, led 29-15 after one quarter and 50-26 at halftime.

Mike Dietrich and Roman Koenemund scored 13 points apiece for the Big Macs (1-7, 3-11).

South Fayette 68, Ringgold 50

South Fayette remained tied for first place in Class 5A Section 3 by defeating visiting Ringgold, 68-50.

The Lions (6-1, 11-4) pulled away in the second quarter when they outscored Ringgold (0-6, 3-10) by a 22-12 margin to open a 39-23 advantage.

Gavin Orosz led South Fayette with 14 points and Jake LeViseur hit for 11.

Ringgold’s Xavion Thomas scored a game-high 18 points and Demitri Lowe chipped in with 16.

Bentworth 49, Riverview 21

Chris Harper scored 20 points and Bentworth held Riverview to five points in the first half as the Bearcats rolled to a 49-21 victory in Class 2A Section 1.

Ben Hays chipped in with 12 points for Bentworth, which led 22-5 at halftime.

Girls results

Bethel Park 44, Trinity 32

Points were hard to come by for Trinity, especially in the fourth quarter, and it led to a 44-32 loss to Bethel Park in a Class 5A Section 4 game at Hiller Hall.

It was the second loss of the season for Trinity (4-3, 7-8) to Bethel Park (3-4, 8-5).

The Hillers trailed 24-17 at halftime but closed to within 31-27 after three quarters. Bethel Park, however, held Trinity to only five points over the final eight minutes and pulled away.

Sadie Orie led the Black Hawks with 16 points and Ella Sabatos had 10.

Sutton Williamson was the only Trinity player in double figures. She had 14 points.

Avella 69, Bentworth 39

Ava Frank and Syd Strope combined for 54 points, powering Avella to a 69-39 victory over visiting Bentworth in a nonsection game.

Frank poured in a game-high 30 points and Strope added 24 as Avella improved to 7-8.

Kayla O’Dell tossed in 16 points for Bentworth (6-8).

West Greene 84, Hundred (W.Va.) 26

West Greene scored 30 first-quarter points and never looked back in a 84-26 victory at Hundred.

Eleven different players hit the scoring column for West Greene (9-3) led by Kendra Tharp’s 19. Freshman Jillissa Yeater notched a career-high 17 and Samantha Zimmerman had 10.

West Greene held leads of 48-14 at the half and 69-17 after three quarters. Johnni Yeager’s 11 points led the Hornets.

West Greene returns to section play Saturday as they host Geibel at noon.

McGuffey 58, Carmichaels 19

Lexi Ewig had 15 points and four steals, leading McGuffey to a 58-19 win over visiting Carmichaels in a nonsection game.

Taylor Schumacher added 12 points, six rebounds and five steals for McGuffey (10-5). Mykenna Meighen had 11 points and Maura Janovich led the Highlanders on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Carmichaels fell to 1-14.

Carlynton 58, Jefferson-Morgan 35

Lucy Vetter scored 14 points to lead Carlynton to a 58-35 win at Jefferson-Morgan in a nonsection game on the Rockets’ home court.

Carlynton (7-7) held J-M to two points in the first quarter and led 31-12 at halftime. Nocalyn Griffin scored 11 points for the Cougars.

Leighana Gooden led J-M (1-13) with 11 points and Ava Wood had 10.
