High school basketball: South Fayette boys survive scare at Bethel Park
Gavin Orosz scored 13 points to help South Fayette edge Bethel Park in a Class 5A, Section 3 boys basketball game Tuesday night.
The win keeps South Fayette (7-1, 12-4) in a tie for first place in the section with Baldwin.
It also finished off a season sweep of the Black Hawks, but this game was much closer than the first meeting, which the Lions won 61-34.
Tyson Wright and Jake Levisuer added 12 points apiece for the Lions .
It was a tight game throughout. The score was tied after one quarter. South Fayette led by three points at halftime, but had that lead trimmed to one point after three quarters.
Tanner Pfeuffer and Michael Bruckner scored 11 points each for the Black Hawks (2-6, 5-10) and Jack Bruckner finished with 10 points.
Thomas Jefferson 64, Trinity 60
Trinity overcame a slow start to take the lead in the third quarter, but ultimately fell short in a Class 5A, Section 3 game at Thomas Jefferson.
Nick Turcola had 22 points for the Jaguars and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
The Jaguars (3-4, 7-8) swept the season series with the Hillers (3-5, 8-6).
Justin Fry finished with 16 points for Thomas Jefferson and Noah Kaszer scored 14.
Jacob Dunkle had a game-high 27 points for Trinity. Jonah Williamson scored 19.
Upper St. Clair 65, Canon-McMillan 19
Upper St. Clair raced out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back in a Class 6A, Section 2 win over Canon-McMillan (1-8, 3-12).
Dane York scored 11 for the Panthers (9-0, 16-1) and George Gombar had 10 points.
Waynesburg 59, Jefferson-Morgan 53
Alex Eck had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to help Waynesburg (5-9) secure a nonsection win over Jefferson-Morgan (10-5).
Alex VanSickle finished with a game-high 18 points and Cole Headlee chipped in 13 points.
Jeremiah Robertson led the Rockets with 12 points. Jase Bedilion scored 11 and John Woodward had 10 points.
Fort Cherry 71, Burgettstown 38
Fort Cherry put five players in double figures and defeated Burgettstown 71-38 in Class 2A Section 3.
Shane Cornali led Fort Cherry (6-3, 8-7) with 16 points and Ryan Huey added 15. The Rangers led 44-23 at halftime and then held Burgettstown (1-8, 4-12) to 15 points in the second half.
Jack Kitzmiller chipped in with 11 points for Fort Cherry, and Evan Rogers and Gavin Grace each had 10.
Parker Rommes paced the Blue Devils with 12 points.
Summit Academy 60, Avella 50
Kyzir Rowman scored 19 points, Quaran Joiner added 15 and Summit Academy pulled away in the second half for a 60-50 win over host Avella in Class A Section 1.
Avella (1-3, 8-7) led 26-25 at halftime but Summit Academy (3-2, 6-5) outscored the Eagles 22-13 in the third quarter to move into the lead.
Bryce Wright had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Cody Day dropped in 12 points and Brayden Fuller had 11.
Belle Vernon 81, Yough 35
Trevor Kovatch scored a game-high 18 points and Belle Vernon won its sixth in a row, 81-35, over Yough in Class 4A Section 3.
Zion Moore added 11 points and Tommy Davis had 10 for the Leopards (7-1, 12-4), who were in control throughout, leading 45-12 at halftime.
Yough is 0-8, 1-16.
Baldwin 61, Peters Township 57
Baldwin outscored visiting Peters Township 15-6 in the fourth quarter to rally and beat the Indians 61-57 in a key Class 5A Section 3 game.
Baldwin (6-1, 14-1) trailed by nine points late in the third quarter.
PT (5-3, 11-5) dropped both games this season to Baldwin.

Peters Township 67, Baldwin 57
Miami (Fla.) recruit Natalie Wetzel pumped in a game-high 34 points, including six three-point field goals, and Peters Township won at Baldwin, 67-57, in a Class 5A Section 4 game.
The game wasn’t as close as the final score suggests as PT (7-0, 14-2) led 31-16 at halftime and 51-31 at the end of three quarters. The Indians have not lost to a WPIAL opponent this season.
Baldwin’s record slipped to 3-4 in section and 8-8 overall.
Burgettstown 48, Bentworth 39
Paige Klodowski poured in a game-high 27 points to pace Burgettstown (6-10) in a nonsection win at Bentworth (6-10).
Savannah Rush added 11 points for the Blue Devils, who led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Liz Wade and Kayla O’Dell scored 11 points each for Bentworth.
Thomas Jefferson 70, Trinity 43
Allie Wilson had 15 points to lead five Thomas Jefferson players in double figures in a Class 5A, Section 4 win over Trinity.
Riley McCabe had 13 points for the Jaguars (6-1, 14-2). Kaylee DeAngelo scored 12, Maggie Spell finished with 11 points and Leah Lockhart contributed 10 points.
Sutton Williamson and Kimari Behrens finished with 13 points apiece for the Hillers (3-5, 8-6).
Belle Vernon 49, West Mifflin 48
Belle Vernon battled back from a halftime deficit and beat West Mifflin 49-48 in a nonsection game on the Titans’ home court.
Belle Vernon (8-8) trailed 25-20 at halftime but outscored West Mifflin (2-11) by a 15-9 margin in the pivotal third quarter to take a one-point lead.
Aubrey Brown and Victoria Salembo each scored 11 points to lead a balanced attack for the Leps. Mia Roebuck added 10 points. Brown grabbed 15 rebounds.
Ar’ryah Scott led three West Mifflin players in double figures with a game-high 17 points.
