High school basketball: Surging Waynesburg wins key section game

Waynesburg remained within striking distance of first place in Class 3A Section 4 by using a balanced attack to win at Brownsville, 68-59.

The Raiders (4-1, 5-9) put five players in double figures led by Dane Woods’ 15 points. Cole Headlee followed with 13 points and eight assists, Alex VanSickile had 12 points, Alex Eck scored 10 and grabbed eight rebounds, and Jack Ricciuti tossed in 10.

The Raiders have won five in a row. They trail first-place Southmoreland by one game in the loss column.

After the first quarter ended tied 13-13, Waynesburg took a 34-24 lead into halftime.

Jaiden Praster led Brownsville (1-4, 3-12) with a game-high 20 points.

Chartiers-Houston 49, West Greene 40

Justus Buckingham scored 18 points, Nate Gregory added 16 and Chartiers-Houston rallied in the fourth quarter to pull out a 49-40 win over West Greene in a Class 2A Section 3 game played on the Bucs’ home court.

West Greene (7-3, 9-7), which handed C-H (8-1, 14-2) its only section loss on a 75-foot buzzer-beater, led 27-24 at halftime and 32-31 after three quarters. The Bucs won the fourth quarter by an 18-8 margin. Buckingham had six points in the pivotal quarter, Gregory added five and Aaron Walsh and Josh Perchinsky each connected on clutch three-pointers.

Lane Allison, who made the game-winner in the first meeting, led West Greene with 13 points, 11 coming in the first half.

Neighborhood Academy 71, Monessen 55

Courtney Wallace and kedron Gilmore each scored 20 points as Neighborhood Academy defeated host Monessen 71-55 in a key Class A Section 2 game.

Neighborhood Academy (6-0, 17-1) forged a double-digit lead in the first quarter and remained in front the rest of the way while winning its seventh in a row.

Monessen (3-3, 9-5) had four players score in double figures led by Rodney Johnson’s 13 points. Tyvaughn Kershaw and Jaw’kwon Cragette each had 11 and Devontae Robinson dropped in 10.

Southmoreland 61, Charleroi 35

Noah Flentzer poured in a game-high 22 points and Southmoreland remained in sole possession of first place in Class 3A Section 4 with a 61-35 victory at Charleroi.

The Scotties (6-0, 13-4) led by only 10-6 after one quarter but opened up a 29-14 edge at halftime.

Jackson Keranko led Charleroi (2-4, 8-9) with 15 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 62, Mapletown 13

Jefferson-Morgan raced to a 35-point halftime lead and crushed host and winless Mapletown 62-13 in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

J-M (8-2, 12-5) led 25-3 after one quarter, 41-6 at halftime and 58-8 after three quarters.

Jeremiah Robertson led J-M in scoring with 16 points, Houston Guesman added 14 and Jaymison Robinson had 11.

Mapletown is 0-10 in section and 0-16 overall.

Burgettstown 63, Carmichaels 36

Burgettstown forged a 24-point lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 63-36 victory over visiting Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.

Parker Rommess led Burgettstown (2-8, 5-12) with a game-high 20 points, helping the Blue Devils to a 28-4 lead at the end of the opening period. Sam Elich tossed in 12 points and Colton County had 11.

Robbie Wilson-Jones was the leading scorer for Carmichaels with (2-8, 3-13) with 15 points.

Mt. Lebanon 76, Canon-McMillan 45

Liam Sheely scored 20 points and Mt. Lebanon defeated host Canon-McMillan 76-45 in Class 6A Section 2.

Lebo (6-4, 10-6), which has won three in a row, led 26-14 after one quarter and 47-25 at halftime.

Jacob Zaber had 16 points and Carter Gould added 15 for the Blue Devils.

Keegan Williams was the only player in double figures for Canon-McMillan (1-9, 3-13) with 10 points.

Bentworth 70, Springdale 58

Chris Harper and Ben Hays combined for 50 points to spark Bentworth to a 70-58 victory over Springdale.

Both Harper and Hays pumped in 25 points and helped the Bearcats come back from a halftime deficit to pull away for the victory.

Springdale led 18-12 after one quarter and 31-30 at halftime. The Bearcats moved ahead, 49-46, at the end of three quarters and won the game with a 21-point fourth quarter.

Nazareth Prep 58, Avella 38

Will Evans scored a game-high 18 points and Nazareth prep broke open a close game in the third quarter to beat host Avella 58-38 in Class A Section 1.

Nazareth prep led 28-24 at halftime and outscored Avella 12-3 in the third quarter.

Cam Ullom and Bryce Wright each scored eight points for Avella.

In other games

Class 3A Section 2 leader Bishop Canevin was a 59-40 winner on its home court over Washington. Baldwin scored 31 points in the first quarter and went on to an 88-58 win over Trinity in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Hiller Hall. Bethel Park was a 55-47 winner over Ringgold in Class 5A Section 3. Greensburg Central Catholic scored 60 points in the first half and won at California, 77-20, in Class 2A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.

Girls results

Keystone Oaks 51, Chartiers-Houston 46

Laney Wagner pumped in 28 points and Keystone Oaks won a battle of section leaders from different classifications, beating host Chartiers-Houston, 51-46.

KO (13-1), which shares first place in Class 3A Section 3, was locked in an even battle for most of the night against Chartiers-Houston (12-4), the Class 2A Section 3 leader. The teams matched scoring totals in three of the four quarters, the difference in the game being KO’s 11-6 edge in the third quarter. The game was tied 24-24 at halftime.

Hannah York tossed in 17 points for the Golden Eagles.

Ava Kolovich and Ava Capazzoli each scored 12 points to lead the Bucs.

South Fayette 79, Montour 33

South Fayette scored 52 points in the first half and rolled to a 79-33 win over visiting Montour in Class 5A Section 3.

The Lions ran their record to 9-0 in section 3 and 16-1 overall.

Lailah Wright and Juliette Leroux each scored 15 points for South Fayette and Haylie Lamonde tallied 14.

In other games

Canon-McMillan upset Class 6A Section 2 leader Upper St. Clair, 45-38, on the Big Macs’ home court. USC falls to 5-1 in section and 12-4 overall. Canon-McMillan moves to within one game of first place at 4-2 in section and 10-6 overall. Avella was a 34-20 winner over visiting Mapletown in Class A Section 2. No game details were reported.
