Belle Vernon boys go 3-for-3 on the weekend
A busy weekend for the Belle Vernon boys basketball team turned out to be a productive one.
After beating Derry 78-52 at home Friday night to take sole possession of first place in Class 4A Section 3, the Leopards defeated Knoch 54-40 on Saturday at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills on Saturday.
About 24 hours later Belle Vernon beat Greensburg Central Catholic, 71-51 at the Shootout at Seton Hill to complete the weekend sweep.
In a battle of top teams in WPIAL Class 4A, Zion Moore scored a game-high 20 points in the win over Knoch.
The Leopards trailed by three points after Knoch won the third quarter, 15-6, but used a 19-12 advantage in the fourth to secure victory.
Tommy Davis added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Leopards (15-4).
Teegan Fincuan led the Knights with 17 points and Jackson Bauman scored 13.
Moore scored 20 more points on Sunday in the victory over the Centurions. Trevor Kovatch added 16 points.
Washington 77, Hopewell 41
Tristan Reed had 13 points to help Washington (5-10) cruise past Hopewell (6-11) Saturday at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge.
The Prexies got off to a fast start, outscoring Hopewell, 21-5, in the first quarter.
Vincent Johnson added 11 points for Washington.
Zach Kovell and James Armstrong had 16 points apiece for the Vikings and Zach Gigliotti scored 10.
Mars 56, South Fayette 51 (OT)
South Fayette led by nine points at halftime, but Mars battled back to force overtime and outscored the Lions 9-4 in the extra period to earn a win at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills.
The Lions (13-5) limited the Fightin’ Planets (11-7) to two points in the second quarter and had a 28-19 halftime lead, but Mars outscored them 37-23 the rest of the way.
Austin Wroblewski led Mars with 21 points and Drew Navetta scored 13.
North Allegheny 45, Canon-McMillan 19
North Allegheny (7-10) raced out to an 18-2 lead and defended its home court in a victory over Canon-McMillan (3-14) in the PBC Hall of Fame Classic on Sunday.
The Tigers were led by Will Robertson, who scored eight points.
Keegan Williams finished with eight points for the Big Macs.
