High School Wrestling: Canon-Mac girls wrestling wins Butler Tournament

In one of the final major events before the WPIAL Championships, Canon-McMillan had two individual champions and won the team title by 43.5 points Saturday at Butler.

Marlee Solomon (124) and Evangeline Gray (148) won a title for the Big Macs.

Solomon won by fall over Pine-Richland’s Aariona Strader in her final and Gray pinned New Castle’s Kaylee Flowers.

Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli made the 190-pound final, but dropped a 7-3 decision to Plum’s Alaina Claassen.

Boys wrestling

Belle Vernon’s Elijah Brown won the 215 pound title at the Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School.

Brown earned a 4-0 decision over Kiski Area’s Cooper Roscosky.

Kole Doppenhauer (189 pounds) also made a championship match for the Leopards, but lost by tech. fall to Grove City’s Cody Hamilton.

Two other local wrestlers were runners-up.

McGuffey’s Emmett Wolfe dropped a close 9-8 decision to Moon’s Cael Yanek in the 133-pound final and Fort Cherry’s Braedon Welsh (189) lost a 13-0 major decision to Kiski Area’s Mark Gray.

Beth-Center had a pair of champions at the Thomas Chevrolet Tournament at Bedford.

Mason Wright earned a 10-3 decision in the 133-pound championship and Malachi Peak (189) defeated Line Mountain’s Maxim Johnson in a 4-3 decision.

West Greene’s Colin Whyte made the heavyweight final, but lost a 7-0 decision to Somerset’s Rowan Holmes.
