High school basketball: Belle Vernon wins showdown for first place
Zion Moore scored a game-high 27 points and Belle Vernon avenged an earlier loss to Elizabeth Forward by beating the Warriors 71-43 Tuesday night in a battle for first place in Class 4A Section 3.
The loss was the first at home this season for EF (7-1, 14-4) as its six-game winning streak was snapped. Belle Vernon (9-1, 16-4) has won 10 in a row.
The Leopards led 17-15 after one quarter and then began to pull away, building a 37-28 halftime advantage and outscoring the Warriors 15-5 in the third quarter.
Tommy Davis chipped in with 15 points for Belle Vernon.
Tyler Basic led EF with 13 points and Daniel Spence scored 10.
Chartiers-Houston 61, Burgettstown 45
Aaron Walsh, Justus Buckingham and Nate Gregory combined for 50 points and Chartiers-Houston held Burgettstown to three points in the third quarter en route to a 61-45 victory over the Blue Devils in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
The win keeps Chartiers-Houston (9-1, 15-2) in first place. The Bucs have won nine straight.
C-H led 32-25 at halftime and then outscored Burgettstown (2-9, 5-13) 16-3 in the pivotal third quarter.
Walsh and Buckingham led the Bucs’ attack, each scoring 17 points. Gregory was close behind with 16.
Parker Rommes paced the Blue Devils with 17 points and Sam Elich chipped in with 14.
West Greene 45, Jefferson-Morgan 39
Lane Allison scored 18 points and West Greene pulled away down the stretch for a 45-39 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan in a key Class 2A Section 3 game.
West Greene (8-3, 10-7), which let a fourth-quarter lead slip away at section leader Chartiers-Houston last Friday, finished strong this time. The Pioneers led 22-19 at halftime and 33-30 after three quarters. West Greene was able to win the game at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
“I’m proud of our effort,” West Greene coach Jim Romanus said. “The kids really scrapped hard. It was a very good battle. We were able to get the lead in the fourth quarter and then get to the free-throw line.”
The win ties West Greene with J-M (8-3, 12-6) in the section. Jeremiah Robertson led the Rockets in scoring with 13 points.
Peters Township 67, Trinity 54
Dylan Donovan scored a game-high 23 points and Peters Township held off Trinity 67-54 in a Class 5A Section 3 game at AHN Arena.
The win stopped a two-game slide for PT (6-3, 12-5). The Indians put three players in double figures. Lucas Rost had 12 points and Nick McCullough 10.
Trinity’s Jacob Dunkl and Jacob Williamson each had big games, scoring 22 and 20 points, respectively. The Hillers, who are battling for the final playoff berth out of the section, dipped to 3-7, 8-8.
Carmichaels 61, Beth-Center 52
Robbie Wilson-Jones led four Carmichaels players in double figures with 12 points and the Mikes stormed back in the second half to beat visiting Beth-Center 61-52 in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Carmichaels (3-8, 4-13) trailed 17-6 after one quarter and 29-15 at halftime. The Mikes, however, scored 46 points in the second half. A steal and layup by Dayton Reynolds, who finished with 11 points, gave the Mikes the lead at 45-44 early in the fourth quarter.
Steve Lewis and Alex Toth each chipped in with 10 points for Carmichaels.
Beth-Center (5-6, 8-10) received a game-high 23 points from Jason Zellie and 10 from Jonah Sussan.
Bishop Canevin 68, McGuffey 56
McGuffey’s Aydan Cunningham flipped in a game-high 27 points but Bishop Canevin put four players in double figures and defeated the Highlanders 68-56 in Class 3A Section 3.
Summit Academy 87, Avella 76
Kyzir Rowan scored 27 points, Robert Young added 20 and Summit Academy defeated visiting Avella 87-76 in a high-scoring Class A Section 1 game.
Avella put five players in double figures, led by Brayden Fuller’s 21 points and Nate Cilia’s double-double of 10 points and 10 assists. Eli Maidment added 11 points, Bryce Wright tallied 11 and Cam Ullom scored 10.
In other games
Baldwin avenged its only Class 5A Section 3 loss by defeating South Fayette 62-36 on the Highlanders’ home court. The win moves Baldwin (8-1, 17-1) into sole possession of first place, a half-game ahead of South Fayette (8-2, 13-6). Central Catholic defeated Canon-McMillan 74-53 in Class 6A Section 2. Keystone Oaks was a 53-36 winner over Washington in Class 3A Section 3. And Monessen lost at Serra Catholic, 74-55, in Class A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.
Girls results
Peters Township 57, Trinity 33
Miami (Fla.) recruit Natalie Wetzel poured in a game-high 28 points as Peters Township defeated Trinity 57-33 in a Class 5A Section 3 game at AHN Arena.
The win makes Peters Township 8-0 in section and 15-2 overall. Trinity slips to 3-7, 8-8.
Taylor McCullough added 10 points for the Indians, who led 34-15 at halftime.
Sutton Williams led the Hillers with 18 points and Bently Layhue had 10.
Carmichaels 45, Bentworth 28
Ali Jacobs scored a game-high 16 points and Carmichaels rallied in the second half to beat Bentworth 45-28 in a Class 2A Section 3 game played on the Mikes’ home court.
Bentworth (3-4, 7-11) led 19-16 at halftime, but the Mikes held the Bearcats to only nine points in the second half.
Carmichaels (2-5, 2-15) moved ahead 30-24 at the end of the third quarter. The Mikes’ Avery Voithofer scored 11 points and Joselyn Carter had 10.
Bentworth was led by Isabella Moyer’s 10 points.
Brownsville 61, Waynesburg 29
Skyler Gates led four Brownsville players in double figures with 17 points and Brownsville rolled to a 61-29 victory over visiting Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
Brownsville (4-5, 11-7) broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Waynesburg 20-4 to take a 35-12 lead into halftime. Zhariah Reed had 15 points for the Falcons, Ciara Horabik added 14 and Ava Clark had 11.
Waynesburg (3-5, 8-8) was led by Mya Smith’s 10 points.
West Greene 37, Mapletown 30
West Greene overcame a strong defensive challenge from Mapletown and some cold shooting of its own to escape with a 37-30 win on the Maples’ home court in Class A Section 2.
Kendra Tharp scored six of her team-high 13 points in a decisive fourth quarter that saw West Greene outscore the Maples 12-3. Madelyn Roberts added 11 for the Pioneers who improved to 11-6 overall and 5-5 in section play.
Nicole Berra scored 13 for Mapletown (1-10, 3-16), which held a 27-25 lead after three quarters.
