High school basketball: Fort Cherry, C-H girls move closer to section titles
Fort Cherry inched closer to a Class 2A Section 2 girls basketball outright championship with a 53-33 win at Burgettstown on Thursday night
The win makes Fort Cherry 8-0 in section and 16-2 overall. The Rangers haven’t lost a game since the calendar flipped to 2025.
Fort Cherry led by only 22-16 at halftime but pulled away in the second half. Jazlyn Martino led FC with a game-high 16 points. Brooke Cornali followed with 13 and Olivia Kemp tossed in 10.
Paige Klodowski led Burgettstown (3-5, 7-12) with 15 points and Savanna Rish had 14.
Seton LaSalle 58, Washington 51
If Class 3A Section 3 leader Seton LaSalle was overlooking host Washington, then the Prexies got the Rebels’ attention early.
Washington forged a six-point lead after one quarter but Seton LaSalle battled back to defeat Wash High, 58-51.
Seton LaSalle (9-1, 13-5) scored 22 points in the second quarter to grab a 26-21 halftime edge and followed that with a 20-point third quarter.
Tiara Curry led SL with 21 points and Libby Michalski scored 12.
Washington’s Olivia Woods pumped in 21 points to share game scoring honors with Curry. The 21 leaves Woods at 999 career points. Kyndra Wynn chipped in with 13 points for the Prexies (4-6, 7-11).
Chartiers-Houston 57, Jefferson-Morgan 26
Class 2A Section 3 leader Chartiers-Houston held visiting Jefferson-Morgan to eight points in the first half and cruised to a 57-26 victory.
Chartiers-Houston moves to 6-0 in section and 14-4 overall. The Bucs led 42-8 at halftime.
Allison Wingard paced the Bucs with 13 points and Ava Kolovich was right behind her in the scoring column with 12.
J-M’s Ava Wood scored 10 points.
McGuffey 55, Waynesburg 14
McGuffey clinched a playoff berth out of Class 3A Section 3 with a 55-14 victory at Waynesburg.
Faith Ealy led a balanced scoring effort by McGuffey with 14 points. Taylor Schumacher followed with 13. The Highlanders are 6-4 in section and 12-7 overall.
Peyton Cowell’s seven points were tops for Waynesburg (3-7, 8-10).
Peters Township 62, Albert Gallatin 26
Bri Morreale led four Peters Township players in double figures with 13 points as the Indians rolled to a 62-26 win at Albert Gallatin in Class 5A Section 4.
Maddyn Mehl and Taylor McCullough each chipped in with 12 points and Natlie Wetzel dropped in 10 as the Indians improved to 9-0 in section and 16-2 overall.
Chartiers Valley 52, Trinity 39
Chartiers Valley outscored Trinity by 15 points in the third quarter and went on to a 52-39 victory in a nonsection game played on the Colts’ home court.
Chartiers Valley (14-6) led 23-18 at halftime before the pivotal third quarter when the Colts held a 22-7 scoring advantage.
Rachel Boehm, with 13 points, was the only CV player to score in double figures.
Gabby Rieg made four three-pointers and led Trinity (8-9) with 12 points. Sutton Williamson followed with 11.
Beth-Center 59, Carmichaels 29
Beth-Center’s Callie Dorsey had another big scoring outburst, pumping in 31 points and leading the Bulldogs to a 59-29 victory over visiting Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.
Dorsey helped B-C (6-2, 12-7) build a 39-17 halftime lead. Violet Trump contributed 12 points for the Bulldogs.
Avery Voithofer was the leading scorer for the Mikes with 14 points.
Clairton 69, Avella 42
Iyanna Wade continued her torrid scoring pace, pumping in 51 points and leading Clairton to a 69-42 win at Avella in Class A Section 2.
Clairton (10-2, 13-4) had a tough time shaking Avella (3-9, 8-12) as the Bears led 31-21 at halftime and 45-38 after three quarters. Wade and Clairton secured the win with a 24-9 scoring edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Syd Strope led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points.
Bishop Canevin 35, West Greene 25
Bishop Canevin pulled away late to win a defensive struggle against West Greene, 35-25, in a Class A Section 2 game on the Crusaders’ home court.
The final score was the largest margin of the game as the Crusaders (5-6, 10-7) pulled even with West Greene (5-6, 11-7) in the section standings.
Canevin’s Natalie Kirsch and West Greene’s Kendra Tharp were the only players in double figures, each scoring 14 points.
Canevin led 16-14 at halftime and 26-21 after three quarters.
Laurel Highlands 52, Belle Vernon 20
Miya Harris led three Laurel Highlands players in double figures with 17 points and the Fillies defeated host Belle Vernon, 52-20, in Class 4A Section 3.
LH (9-3, 14-5) pulled away in the second half after leading 29-12 at halftime.
Saylor Lee was the leading scorer for Belle Vernon (5-6, 8-11) with eight points. Aubrey Brown grabbed 12 rebounds.
Serra Catholic 61, Monessen 45
Bella Dumbroski and Serra Catholic won a shootout with Monessen and Madison Johnson as the Eagles beat the host Greyhounds 61-45 in Class A Section 2.
Dumbroski scored a game-high 31 points and was supported by Abby Gaines’ 17 points.
Johnson had a strong offensive game, scoring 27 points. Ny’jaziah Carter also was in double figures with 14 points.
Geibel Catholic 50, Mapletown 16
Emma Larkin pumped in 26 points and Mallory Clemmer added 16 as Geibel Catholic won at Mapletown 50-16 in a Class A Section 2 game.
Section-leading Geibel improves to 11-1, 19-1. Mapletown is 1-11, 3-17.
South Fayette 75, New Castle 22
Class 5A Section 3 leader South Fayette (11-0, 18-1) ran its winning streak to 10 games with a 75-22 thumping of New Castle on Senior Night.
Haylie Lamonde and Cierra Rexrode each scored 12 points for the Lions and Alexa Ankrum tallied 11.
Elizabeth Forward 55, Ringgold 11
Kaylin Staszak scored 23 points and Elizabeth Forward shut out Ringgold in the second half en route to a 55-11 win in Class 4A Section 3.
Boys results
Bentworth 54, Clairton 49
Chris Harper and Ben Hays each scored 22 points, powering Bentworth to a 54-49 home-court win over Clairton in Class 2A Section 1.
The Bearcats (5-6, 8-9) gave a big boost to their playoff chances with a come-from-behind win. Bentworth trailed 32-24 at halftime but held Clairton (7-4, 7-8) to 17 points in the second half.
Lucas Burt had 10 points for Bentworth.
In other games
Trinity was a 53-46 winner on the road over Hampton in a non-section contest. The Hillers’ Jacob Dunkle scored his 1,000th career points. No other game details were available at press time.
