High school baseball: Two runs enough for Avella
Avella pushed across two runs in the early innings and the pitching of starter Bryce Wright and reliever Logan Fedak made sure they were enough as the Eagles defeated Washington 2-1 in a season-opening game Friday.
Avella scored single runs in each of the first two innings. Wash High answered with a solo home run by Tyler Bainer in the bottom of the second but that was all the scoring the Prexies could muster.
Wright struck out eight over five innings. Fedak had four strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief.
Bainer was the hard-luck loser as he fired a four-hit complete game.
Wright helped his cause by going 3-for-3 with a double and Chas Rush tripled.
South Fayette 6, Tri-City Christian 1
South Fayette opened its season with a 6-1 win over Tri-City Christian (Calif.) in a game played in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Lions broke a 1-1 tie by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Cody Bungert and Chaz Kosko doubled for South Fayette. Ryan Speer was the winning pitcher with two innings of scoreless relief.
Charleroi 12, Uniontown 9
Charleroi did all of its scoring in the first three innings and held on to defeat visiting Uniontown, 12-9.
Luke Glasser went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBi to lead the Charleroi hitting. Braeden Todaro and Kaden Woods each added a double. The Cougars used seven pitchers.
