High school softball: Baldwin overpowers Canon-Mac
Talk about starting the season with a bang. How about six of them?
Camryn Temme and Ryley Shaw, the first two hitters in Baldwin’s batting order, combined to go 6-for-8 with six home runs and seven RBI as the Highlanders won at Canon-McMillan 8-1 Friday in a season-opening game.
Losing pitcher Lyla Mowery had an RBI triple for Canon-McMillan.
Carmichaels 6, Laurel Highlands 1
Bailey Barnyak struck out 13 and Carys McConnell drove in a pair of runs as Carmichaels defeated visiting Laurel Highlands, 6-1.
Barnyak helped her cause by hitting a triple.
Chartiers-Houston 7, West Allegheny 5
Chartiers-Houston scored six runs over the final two innings to rally for a 7-5 win at West Allegheny.
Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri hit a tiebreaking three-run homer that gave C-H a 4-3 lead in the sixth. The Bucs added three more runs in the seventh, two on a double by Lauren Rush.
West Allegheny scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. The Indians’ Ava Henke homered and drove in three, and Savanna Benish had a double and triple.
Belle Vernon 13, Waynesburg 12
Bella Williams hit a grand slam and Belle Vernon scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat visiting Waynesburg, 13-12.
Waynesburg had overcome an early five-run deficit and scored six runs in the sixth to take a 12-9 lead. Belle Vernon, however, scored a run in the sixth and three in the seventh. An infield single by Katie Sokol scored winning pitcher Maddie Grisnik with the winning run. Taylor Beech had a two-run single to tie the score in the seventh.
Waynesburg’s Avery Davis hit two doubles.
South Side 18, Burgettstown 5
South Side Beaver used three big innings and shut out Burgettstown over the final four to beat the Blue Devils 18-5 in six innings.
Ariel Poehler and Madison Morrow each homered and drove in four runs for the Rams.
Burgettstown’s Lily Sherman hit a home run and Raya Sentipal went 3-for-3 with a triple.
Mapletown 18, California 4
Makenna Lotspeich hit a double and triple, Treslee Weston had three singles and Cora Roberts pitched a two-hitter as Mapletown defeated California 18-4 in five innings.
Roberts struck out 11 and Mapletown’s Marley Shiflett added a triple as the Maples had 15 hits.
Peters Township 13, Ringgold 0
Sophomore pitcher Lili Giulianelli fired a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts, powering Peters Township to a 13-0 victory over Ringgold.
Avery Carson and Makenzie Morgan led the PT hitters with three hits each. Morgan and Addie Brunette each drove in four runs, and Carson smacked two doubles. Morgan had a triple.
