High school baseball: Sieg’s RBI double wins for Fort Cherry in section opener

Matt Sieg’s double scored Tyler Wolfe in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Fort Cherry a 3-2 win over Beth-Center in a Class 2A Section 1 opener Monday.

Beth-Center took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a home run by Ashten Pinkney, but Fort Cherry scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the score. Wolfe led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and one out later scored on Sieg’s double to center field.

Dylan Lueck was the winning pitcher with one scoreless inning of relief. B-C’s Jackson Nopwaskey struck out seven over six innings.

Avella 4, West Greene 3

Avella ran its record to 5-0 with a 4-3 win in eight innings over host West Greene in Class A Section 1.

West Greene scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 3-3, but Avella went back ahead when Tristen Davis’ RBI groundout scored Alex Brandenburg.

Bryce Wright was 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBI for Avella. Winning pitcher Brayden Fuller did not give up an earned run in 3⅓ innings of relief.

Dylan Hughes was 3-for-3 and drove in all three West Greene runs. Jackson Grimes had a double.

Trinity 6, Chartiers Valley 5

Trinity overcame an early four-run deficit and beat Chartiers Valley 6-5 in the Class 5A Section 2 opener.

Trinity trailed 5-1 in the second inning and closed to within 5-4 in the third. Still down by one run in the fifth, Trinity took advantage of two run-scoring wild pitches by CV to take a 6-5 lead.

Winning pitcher Jackson Burt threw four scoreless innings of relief, striking out five.

Matthew Robaugh hit a solo home run for the Hillers.

Charleroi 13, Washington 4

Braeden Todaro, the No. 9 hitter in Charleroi’s lineup, doubled and drove in four runs, Lazer Glasser went 3-for-4 and scored three times, and the Cougars defeated Washington 13-4 in Class 3A Section 4.

Jake Gelder tripled for Charleroi and Logan Usher was the winning pitcher in relief.

Will Callan drove in two runs for Wash High.

South Fayette 7, Moon 2

South Fayette scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 7-2 win over Moon in Class 5A Section 2.

South Fayette’s Ethan Rose struck out seven over four innings.

Elizabeth Forward 1, Ringgold 0

Cy Herchelroath fired a no-hitter and Elizabeth Forward scored the game’s only run on a Mitchell Vuick RBI single in the top of the seventh inning as the Warriors edged Ringgold 1-0 in Class 4A Section 2.

Herchelroath struck out nine and did not issue a walk.

Two Ringgold pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

EF’s Landon Jackson led off the seventh with a double and scored on Vuick’s hit.

Gateway 15, McGuffey 0

Gateway was a 15-0 winner over McGuffey in a nonsection game.

Frazier 8, Bentworth 1

Frazier scored four runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-1 win over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 1.

The Bearcats were held to two hits, including a double by Lucas Burt.
