High school baseball: Avella stays unbeaten, sweeps series

Avella ran its record to 6-0 with a 15-7 win over visiting West Greene on Tuesday in Class A Section 1.

Bryce Wright homered and drove in three and Jorden Moore had five RBI as Avella improved to 2-0 in the section and swept the two-game series.

Winning pitcher Chas Rush struck out eight over 5⅔ innings.

Charleroi 13, Washington 3

Charleroi scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish off a 13-3 win over Washington and sweep the two-game series in Class 3A Section 4.

Jake Corrin went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Jace Pager was 3-for-4 and also drove in two to lead the Charleroi (2-0, 3-1) attack. Winning pitcher Brock Henderson went 5⅓ innings.

Jayden Hagan had two hits, including a double, for Wash High (0-2, 0-5).

Waynesburg 13, Brownsville 7

Alex VanSickle hit a two-run homer and drove in three, Troy Groves added a run-scoring triple and Waynesburg defeated Brownsville 13-7 in Class 3A Section 4.

Austin Surber hit a double and pitched 4⅓ innings of relief to get the win. Ethan Kiger also had a double for the Raiders (1-0, 4-0).

Burgettstown 16, Chartiers-Houston 1

Burgettstown scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to beat Chartiers-Houston 16-1 in Class 2A Section 1.

Brian Charles went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs and Trent Stevens was 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order for Burgettstown (1-0, 2-0). Sam Elich had a double, two RBI and scored three runs.

Matthew Bredel was the winning pitcher.

Canon-McMillan 5, Thomas Jefferson 1

Michael Stafford and Sebastian Shulsky combined on a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Canon-McMillan beat Thomas Jefferson 5-1 in a nonsection game.

The Big Macs improve to 3-1.

Shulsky threw three hitless innings of relief with seven strikeouts. Alex Shank, Colin Yeager, Massimo Falconi and Troy Stimpson each doubled with Shank driving in a pair for C-M.

Belle Vernon 11, Uniontown 2

Parker Lind struck out 12 over five innings and Belle Vernon defeated visiting Uniontown 11-2 in Class 4A Section 2.

Lucas Judy had a double and drove in three, and Kole Doppleheuer had three hits and scored three times to lead the undefeated Leopards (1-0, 3-0).

Chartiers Valley 5, Trinity 4

Chartiers Valley scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Trinity 5-4 and split the two-game series in Class 5A Section 2.

The run came after Trinity (1-1, 1-2) scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

Matthew Robaugh had a double for the Hillers.

Beth-Center 11, Fort Cherry 8

Beth-Center scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to overcome a six-run deficit and beat Fort Cherry 11-8 in Class 2A Section 1.

The teams split the two-game series.

Fort Cherry (1-1, 1-3) led 6-0 before the big inning by B-C (1-1, 2-1). The Bulldogs had only five hits but took advantage of 10 walks and five hit batsmen. Hunter Lloyd was the winning pitcher in relief.

Xander Day and Chase Bebout each drove in two runs for B-C.

Tyler Wolfe drove in four for Fort Cherry.

Ringgold 6, Elizabeth Forward 2

Anthony Koziel pitched 6⅓ strong innings, leading Ringgold to a 6-2 win in eight innings over Elizabeth Forward and a split of the two-game series in Class 4A Section 2.

Koziel allowed three hits and two unearned runs. He struck out seven and walked only one.

Ringgold won the game by scoring four times in the top of the eighth.

Sam Allen hit two doubles and Alex Kolano had one for the Rams.

Moon 8, South Fayette 4

Moon scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for an 8-4 victory over South Fayette in Class 5A Section 2.

Trey Skeen drove in a pair and Cody Bungert had a double for South Fayette.

Carmichaels 15, Mapletown 0

Carmichaels beat Mapletown 15-0 in a Class A Section 1 game. The Mikes scored nine times in the first inning.

Ryder Krieg had three hits and scored three times, and Dayton Reynolds drove in three runs.

GCC 10, Jefferson-Morgan 0

Jefferson-Morgan was held to one hit in a 10-0 loss in five innings at Greensburg Central Catholic.

Serra Catholic 15, Monessen 0

Serra Catholic was a 15-0 winner over Monessen in Class A Section 3.

South Park 10, California 0

South Park was a 10-0 winner at California in a nonsection game.
