High school baseball: Raiders sweep series with Brownsville

Undefeated Waynesburg scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday and defeated Brownsville 13-5 to sweep the two-game series in Class 3A Section 4.

Waynesburg (2-0, 5-0) trailed 4-2 before its big inning. Derek Turcheck hit a three-run homer in the fifth and finished with four RBI. Alex VanSickle was 2-for-2 with two triples, Troy Groves and Zach Joblits each had a double, and Austin Surber drove in three runs.

Groves allowed four runs (one earned) over six innings and struck out nine.

Carmichaels 14, Mapletown 3

Carmichaels broke open a close game by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to beat Mapletown 14-3 in Class A Section 1.

The Mikes (2-0, 2-1) swept the two-game series.

GCC 5, Jefferson-Morgan 2

Two Greensburg Central Catholic pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the Centurions defeated Jefferson-Morgan 5-2 to sweep the two-game series in Class A Section 1.

John Woodward had a double for J-M (0-2, 1-2). GCC is 2-0, 4-1.
