Fort Cherry’s Matt Sieg, who has led the Rangers to two consecutive WPIAL Class A football championships, was announced Saturday as the winner of the Willie Thrower Award.
The Thrower Award is given annually to the top quarterback in the WPIAL.
Sieg was selected from a group of five finalists that also included Peters Township’s Nolan DiLucia, North Catholic’s Joey Felitsky, Bethel Park’s Tanner Pfeuffer and Central Catholic’s Jy’Aire Walls.
The award is named after Thrower,a New Kensington native who was the first black quarterback to take a snap in the NFL, playing for the Chicago Bears in 1953.
A junior, Sieg passed for 1,345 yards and 20 touchdowns last season in addition to rushing for 1,832 yards and 32 scores. He is the first WPIAL quarterback to pass and rush for 1,000 yards in a season three times.
Sieg has committed to play at Penn State.
This is the fifth year for the Thrower Award.
