High school baseball: Burgettstown gets split decision, but wins section game
Burgettstown had a busy Thursday, winning 15-3 in the completion of a Class 2A Section 1 game against Frazier in Perryopolis, then drove to Washington and dropped a nonsection night game to McGuffey, 5-2, at EQT Park.
Burgettstown (9-1, 11-1) is tied for first place in the section with Fort Cherry. The Blue Devils and Rangers begin a two-game series for the title Monday at Burgettstown.
Against Frazier, seven different Burgettstown players had at least one RBI, led by Brian Charles’ three. Charles and Sam Elich each had a double and winning pitcher Jayden Roach scattered five hits.
McGuffey scored four times in the fifth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit.
The Highlanders’ Cam Dames pitched into the seventh inning and also drove in two runs. Austin Johnson and Lincoln Johnson each hit a triple.
Elich tripled for Burgettstown.
Trinity 10, Waynesburg 0
Matthew Robaugh had a huge game, going 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits and three runs, powering Trinity to a 10-0 win in six innings at Waynesburg in nonsection play.
Robaugh had a triple and two doubles. Trinity (8-8) broke open a close game by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning.
Luke Poland and Aaron Harshman combined on a three-hit shutout. Poland pitched the first four innings.
Alex VanSickle had a double for Waynesburg (14-2).
Carmichaels 12, Avella 6
Jordan Davis and Brayden Andrews each drove in three runs as Carmichaels defeated host Avella 12-6 in the completion of a suspended game in Class A Section 1.
The win clinched a playoff berth for Carmichaels. The Mikes led 5-2 after two innings when the game was stopped because of rain Tuesday.
Davis and Cooper Richards each had a double to back the winning pitching of Jas Zdravecky, who worked five innings. The Mikes are 7-3 in section, 10-4 overall and have won five in a row.
Logan Fedak had a double and drove in four, and Bryce Wright went 4-for-5, for Avella (6-6, 10-6).
Jefferson-Morgan 9, Washington 1
Drew Adams pitched a three-hitter and John Woodward went 4-for-4 with double and four RBI as Jefferson-Morgan defeated visiting Washington 9-1 in a nonsection game.
J-M improves to 11-3. The Rockets have won 10 in a row.
Adams needed only 82 pitches to throw the complete game. He did not walk a batter. Evan Kniha and Brayden Ellsworth doubled for Jefferson-Morgan.
Isaac Charnik doubled for Wash High.
California 6, Brownsville 3
California did all of its scoring in the second inning and beat Brownsville 6-3 in nonsection play.
Winning pitcher Logan Hartley allowed one hit over five innings and Chase Shemansky got the final four outs for a save.
Kaden Weston had a two-run single in the Trojans’ second inning.
