High school baseball: Fort Cherry starts fast, beats Avella
Landon Trnavsky homered, tripled and drove in three runs, powering Fort Cherry to a 12-2 win over visiting Avella in a five-inning nonsection game Friday.
Trnvasky led a 13-hit attack that scored all of its runs in the first three innings. Ben Demascal and Tyler Wolfe also homered for Fort Cherry, which improved to 12-4. Colton Temple doubled, drove in three runs and pitched three scoreless innings. Wolfe, Ryan Huey and Dylan Lueck had doubles.
Avella (10-7) did all of its scoring in the fifth inning. Noah Kimberland and Tristan Davis doubled for the Eagles.
Belle Vernon 10, Yough 0
Braden Andrews threw a two-hit shutout as Belle Vernon blanked Yough 10-0 in a five-inning nonsection game.
Connor Bergman drove in three runs and Cole Matusik hit a double and a triple as the Leopards improved to 13-2.
