High School Baseball: Andrews powers Carmichaels past West Greene
Colin Andrews threw a six-hit shutout and playoff-bound Carmichaels defeated visiting West Greene 2-0 in a Class A Section 1 game Monday.
Andrews walked one and struck out seven. He needed only 91 pitches to finish the complete-game effort.
Carmichaels (8-3, 11-4) ran its winning streak to five games by scoring single runs in the third and sixth innings. In the third, Robbie Wilson-Jones hit an RBI double to give Andrews the only run he would need. In the sixth, Brayden Andrews’ two-out single drove in an insurance run.
Dillon Fisher had a double for the Mikes.
Losing pitcher Danny Knight threw a seven-hit complete game. He allowed one earned run and struck out six.
Ringgold 4, Laurel Highlands 0:
Three Ringgold pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout and Gavin Angotti scored two runs as Ringgold won 4-0 at Laurel Highlands in Class 4A Section 2.
The pitching of Anthony Koziel, winner Jimmy Nash and Ashton Mincin helped Ringgold (6-5, 8-9) move above the .500 mark in the section. The Rams scored a run in each of the first three innings.
Alex Kolano had a double and sacrifice fly for the Rams. Demetri Lowe also doubled.
Belle Vernon 6, West Mifflin 2
Parker Lind struck out 13, powering Belle Vernon to a 6-2 win over visiting West Mifflin in Class 4A Section 2.
The win moves Belle Vernon (9-2, 14-2) into a tie for first place in the section with West Mifflin. Elizabeth Forward is a half-game behind.
Lind allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. Belle Vernon trailed 2-1 before scoring five runs in the fifth inning. Lucas Judy drove in two runs with a single that gave the Leopards the lead.
