High School Softball: Ferri powers Chartiers-Houston past Union in extra innings
Meadow Ferri hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth and pitched a complete game with 16 strikeouts to lead Chartiers-Houston past Union, 2-1, in extra innings in a nonsection game Wednesday.
Ferri, a Kent State recruit, yielded four hits, six walks and one unearned run.
Lauren Rush hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the first for the Bucs, which was part of a 4-for-4 day at the plate.
Olivia Benedict plated a run for Union in the fourth with a double down the left field line.
Mia Preuhs was a hard-luck loser for Union (16-2), which had a 12-game winning streak snapped. She had 11 strikeouts and two walks over 8-plus innings.
Ella Richey and Alana Palone singled twice each for the Bucs (17-1).
Bentworth 2, West Greene 1
Sofia Gaussa drew a bases loaded walk to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-1 win for Bentworth (8-9) over West Greene (13-3).
Kyleigh Glaze hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the Bearcats that tied the game at 1-1.
Kylee Davis had an RBI groundout in the first for West Greene’s lone run.
Willow Eckels allowed one run over seven innings on four hits, three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.
Payton Gilbert took the loss allowing two runs on six hits and had five strikeouts and three walks.
Marissa Tharp singled twice for the Pioneers.
Bentworth also finished a Class 2A Section 4 game against Brownsville that was suspended due to weather on April 25 and lost 1-0.
Avonworth 6, South Fayette 4
Emma Obersteiner smacked a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to propel Avonworth (15-4) past South Fayette 6-4 in a nonsection game.
Obersteiner went 2-for-4 with a double and had four RBI.
Maddie Cavenaugh homered to center field to give the Lions a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh. Brenna Dunn had three hits for South Fayette, including a double.
The Lions (12-6) outhit the Antelopes 9-7, but made two errors, which led to three unearned runs.
