High school baseball: McGuffey clinches playoff berth

McGuffey got some help Thursday from, of all teams, rival Washington.

The Prexies defeated Keystone Oaks 12-7 in the completion of a suspended game, which clinched a Class 3A playoff berth out of Section 4 for McGuffey.

Isaac Charnik pitched seven strong innings in relief for Wash High, allowing two runs on four hits.Jayden Hagan had three hits and drove in two runs.

Wash High picked up two wins on the day as the Prexies beat Winchester Thurston 16-15 in eight innings in a wild nonsection game. Winchester Thurston scored six runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 15-15, but Wash High when Charnik’s sacrifice fly pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Caleb Patton had an amazing game at the plate. He went 4-for-4 with four triples, four runs and three RBI.

William Callan was the winning pitcher.

Trinity 4, Moon 3

Playoff-bound Trinity edged host Moon 4-3 in Class 5A Section 2.

Ayvari Chandler had a big game for the Hillers, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Matthew Robaugh had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored twice.

Winning pitcher Zach Schrader struck out six over six innings and J.R. Rieg got the final three outs – two on strikeouts – to earn a save.

Bethel Park 3, Canon-McMillan 0

Three Bethel Park pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Black Hawks shut out Canon-McMillan 3-0 in a nonsection game.

Sebastian Shulsky struck out 10 over five innings for Canon-Mac.
