High School Softball: Gonglik pitches Bentworth past South Allegheny

Sydney Gonglik is back and just as dominant as ever.

Gonglik struck out 15 in a complete game and hit a solo home run as Bentworth upset South Allegheny, 9-1, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A softball playoffs.

Gonglik did not pitch most of the regular season due to injury, but was locked in Thursday, allowing only three hits. She also singled and had two RBI.

Kayla Odell had a two-run homer for the Bearcats (9-9) and Kyleigh Glaze hit an RBI double.

Cameran Colecchi doubled for South Allegheny (14-4).

Chartiers-Houston 15, Brentwood 0

Ella Richey hit a grand slam and tripled in the first inning and had an RBI single in the second to lead Chartiers-Houston (18-2) to a 15-0 win in three innings over Brentwood (6-9) in the Class 2A first round.

Meadow Ferri had a two-run triple and pitched three perfect innings with seven strikeouts. Richey, Lauren Rush, and Taryne Drilak each went 3-for-3 on the day. Drilak doubled, tripled and had an RBI. Zaylee Fonner went 2-for-2 with a triple and a pair of RBI.

McGuffey 5, Ligonier Valley 1

Makenna Crothers pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and did not allow an earned run for McGuffey (11-5) in a 5-1 win over Ligonier Valley (5-11) in the Class 3A first round.

Crothers allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter. Maura Janovich and Courtney Bedillion hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Highlanders. Miley Main had an RBI double in the third.

Riverside 14, Waynesburg 4

Riverside racked up a dozen hits and earned a 14-4 upset win over Waynesburg in five innings in the Class 2A first round.

Saeryn Hoover and Charlie Bissell had three hits apiece for the Panthers (8-9) and Camryn Friello drove in four runs without recording a hit.

Waynesburg (11-9) had four errors. Bria Stephenson went 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Neshannock 15, Burgettstown 0

Miley Anderson tripled twice and drove in five runs as three-time defending champion Neshannock (19-0) earned a 15-0 win in three innings over Burgettstown (8-11) in the Class 2A first round.

Anderson went 4-for-4 and finished a home run short of the cycle. Addy Frye pitched three perfect innings with eight strikeouts.

Deer Lakes 7, Charleroi 0

Despite getting 10 hits, Charleroi couldn’t push a run across and fell, 7-0, to Deer Lakes in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Laney Dineff pitched a shutout, dancing around Charleroi’s 10 hits. She had two strikeouts. Siena Plummer had a two-run triple for the Lancers (8-13).

Ariahna Blouse had eight strikeouts in the loss. She doubled for the Cougars (9-9).

Sewickley Academy 15, Monessen 0

Charlotte Andrews pitched four-inning no-hitter and Sanna Grant hit a two-run homer to lead Sewickley Academy (11-5) to a 15-0 win over Monessen (6-9) in the Class A first round.

Andrews had seven strikeouts and no walks. Marie Bigi had a two-run double in a seven-run first inning for the Panthers.

Jeannette 13, Avella 3

Seven errors proved too much to overcome as Avella (5-11) lost 13-3 to Jeannette (13-4) in the Class A first round.

Only two of Jeannette’s 13 runs were earned.

The Jayhawks scored seven times in the fifth, which was highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Abigail Shaw.

Avery Rado drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.
