High school baseball: Fast start puts Carmichaels in semifinals
Carmichaels scored five runs over the first two innings, Jas Dravecky pitched into the seventh inning and the Mikes defeated Leechburg 6-3 in the WPIAL Class A baseball quarterfinals Tuesday night at West Mifflin.
The win sends Carmichaels (14-4) into the semifinals against Eden Christian tonight (7 p.m.) at West Mifflin.
Carmichaels scored four times in the top of the first inning and added a fifth run in the second frame. That was enough offense for Zdravecky and reliever Robbie Wilson-Jones. Zdravecky gave up three runs (one earned) over 6.2 innings. Wilson-Jones got the final out.
Brayden Andrews drove in two runs and Wilson-Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs to spark the Mikes’ offense.
Seneca Valley 4, Canon-McMillan 0
Andrew Malichky fired a five-hit shutout and Micah Olayer hit a home run, leading Seneca Valley to a 4-0 victory over Canon-McMillan in the WPIAL Class 6A baseball semifinals at Boyce-Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair.
Malichky struck out nine and needed only 83 pitches to toss the complete game.
The win sends Seneca Valley (16-6) into the final next week at EQT Park. Canon-McMillan ends its season with a 15-7 record.
Seneca Valley scored two runs in the second inning on a single by owen Voelp. Player led off the fourth with a home run and the raiders tacked on an insurance run in the inning.
Canon-McMillan had one extra-base hit, a double by Collin Yeager. Who had two of the Big Macs’ hits.
Shaler 2, Peters Township 1
Dante Deleonibus pitched a complete game, Troy Leas scored a run and drove in one, and Shaler edged Peters Township 2-1 in the Class 5A semifinals at Plum.
The loss drops PT into the third-place consolation game Bethel Park.
The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Colin Stofik singled home Reese Clarke, who led off the inning with a double.
Shaler scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Leas had an RBI double and scored on a throwing error.
That was all for the scoring as Deleonibus struck out eight and scattered seven hits. PT pitcher Zach Miner also tossed a seven-hitter, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out five.
Eden Christian 6, Avella 0
Noah Emwiler tossed a two-hitter and second-seeded Eden Christian Academy used a pair of three-run innings to beat Avella 6-0 in a Class A quarterfinals game at Burkett Park.
Eden Christian (15-4) scored three times in the first inning and added three more runs in the fifth.
Emswiler struck out 12 and issued only one walk. The only offense 10th-seeded Avella (11-8) generated came from single hit by Logan Fedak and Tristan Davis.
Indiana 11, Belle Vernon 2
Top-seeded Indiana scored six runs in the third inning and went on to an 11-2 win over Belle Vernon in the Class 4A semifinals at Gateway.
Four Indiana pitchers combined on a two-hitter.
