Carmichaels scored four runs in the top of the first inning and two pitchers made sure they were enough as the sixth-seeded Mikes defeated second-seeded Eden Christian Academy 4-3 in the WPIAL Class A baseball semifinals Friday night at Gateway High School.
The win sends Carmichaels (15-4) into the championship game, either Tuesday or Wednesday, at EQT Park. The Mikes will play Section 1 rival Greensburg Central Catholic for the third time.
Carmichaels had its first five batters of the game reach base. Robbie Wilson-Jones smashed a leadoff triple and Eden Christian issued walks to the next four Mikes. Cooper Richards capped the big inning with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Eden Christian starting pitcher Brady Hull did not retire a better.
Colin Andrews kept Carmichaels in front by pitching into the seventh inning. He scattered five hits and struck out five before reaching the pitch count limit. Wilson-Jones was called upon in relief and he got the final two outs for a save.
Eden Christian scored one run in the first inning and added two in the third.
