Addy Frye struck out 15 and hit one of Neshannock’s two home runs as the Lancers defeated Bentworth 4-1 in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals Friday night at Pleasant Valley Elementary School.

Neshannock (21-0), the defending WPIAL champion, did all of its scoring in the first three innings. Gabby Quinn hit a two-run homer in the first inning and an error by the Bearcats set up Callie Biondi’s RBI double in the second inning.

Frye’s solo homer in the third ended the scoring for Neshannock.

Bentworth scored its only run in the top of the third when Sydney Gonglik’s single scored Hailey Tartar, who led off the inning with a single.

Gonglik and Frye both allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter. Gonglik struck out 11.

Bentworth will play Riverside next week in the consolation game that will determine a PIAA playoff qualifier.

Union 15, Jefferson-Morgan 0

Doug Fisher is having the type of run any coach would be jealous of having.

For the last eight years, the head coach of Union’s softball team has taken his team to the finals of the WPIAL playoffs.

And this year is no different.

Fisher’s Scotties blasted five home runs, including two inside-the-park types, as they crushed Jefferson-Morgan, 15-0, in a three-inning WPIAL Class A game on a chilly Friday afternoon at Montour High School. Left Fielder Koryann Shannon cracked two home runs and drove in five while Mia Pruehs hit an inside-the-park home run in Union’s six-run first inning. Union scored four in the second and five in the third. Trelyn Fisher had the other inside-the-park home run..

“You never know,” said Fisher. “These girls can hit.”

Union now has 44 home runs this season.

“I didn’t know anything about them.” said Fisher of Jeff-Morgan. “That’s what I was worried about.”

Jefferson-Morgan produced just four hits and didn’t advance a runner past second base.

“They really hit the ball today,” said J-M head coach Rich Rush. “They are very disciplined.”

Jefferson-Morgan has a third-place consolation game next week with the winner advancing to the PIAA tournament.
