Three girls golfers medal at WPIAL championships

SEWICKLEY – Local girls golfers took home a pair of silver medals and one bronze on Tuesday at the WPIAL Class 3A and 2A Championships that were held at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
Peters Township had two of the top-3 finishers in Class 3A as Betty Glyptis was the runner-up and defending champion Ellie Benson placed third.
In Class 2A, Chartiers-Houston’s JoJo Jaskulski was the second-place finisher.
Glyptis, Benson and Jaskulski qualified for the PIAA Championships that will be held Oct. 21-22 in State College at the Penn State Golf Courses.
Glyptis had the low round of all golfers – both Class 2A and 3A – in Tuesday’s second round. The opening round was held last week at Seven Oaks Country Club in Beaver. Glyptis shot 2-over 74 at Sewickley Heights and finished with a two-round total of 7-over 151. She finished seven strokes behind defending state champion Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward, who carded an even-par 144 for the two rounds. Glyptis made her move on the front nine Tuesday, shooting 1-under 35.
Benson, a senior, began the second round in second place, one spot ahead of Glyptis but dropped to third after shooting 81. Her two-round total was 155.
The top seven golfers in Class 3A advanced to the state tournament. South Fayette’s Emma Nickolas was 14th with a two-round total of 177, 10 shots off the qualifying mark.
Trinity’s Izzy Lesako was 20th, South Fayette’s Olivia Valentino finished 22nd and Canon-McMillan’s Jordyn Larkin placed 23rd.
Jaskulski matched Class 2A winner Alyssa Zhang of Shady Side Academy for the low round of the day in the classification. Jaskulski shot 6-over 78 and finished the tournament with a two-round score of 13-over 157. Zhang won the gold medal with a 7-over 151.
The top nine finishers in Class 2A qualified for the state tournament. Belle Vernon’s Sydney Stark placed 11th, one spot from the alternate’s position. Stark shot 93 Tuesday.
