South Fayette, Peters Twp. advance to WPIAL golf finals

UNIONTOWN – It was a rainy day at an aptly named course, Duck Hollow, for Tuesday’s WPIAL Class 3A Boys team golf semifinal, but the weather didn’t seem to bother South Fayette.
The Lions won Tuesday’s semifinal besting the field by 13 shots to advance to the WPIAL Championships.
Peters Township finished third, meaning it advanced to WPIALs as well.
The WPIAL Championships are Thursday at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon.
South Fayette shot 386 as a team and had a nice cushion over second place Moon, which shot 399. Peters Township shot 403 to best Canon-McMillan by five strokes for the final spot in Thursday’s finals.
Sam Bishop and Brady Newman both shot 74 to lead South Fayette. Jackson Stevens carded a 78 and Noah Nickolas had an 81. All four are seniors. Junior Hudson Vennum finished with a 79.
For Peters Township, Ty Ondrejko led the way with a 79. Camden Reyes shot 80. Finn Sobehart and Caden Benson each shot 81 and Kaden Holleran had an 82.
The consistency of the Indians helped them edge out the Big Macs.
Chase Werthman had the low score for the Big Macs with a 79. Ben Taczak and Hunter Werthman shot 81 and Blake Simmons finished at 83.
Trinity finished fifth with a team score of 415 and Belle Vernon was one stroke behind at 416, finishing in a tie for sixth with Central Catholic.
Ryan Walther, a senior, and freshman Lucas Daniels each shot 80 for the Hillers.
Belle Vernon senior Jordan Mocello turned in the low round of the day, shooting a three-under par 69. It was a tough day for the rest of his Leopards teammates however, as no one else shot better than 84.
