Girls soccer: Goal by freshman gives Waynesburg upset win

Waynesburg freshman Ella Kincer scored the only goal of the game, with 20:31 remaining, and goalkeeper Payton Cowell stopped every shot she faced as the 11th-seeded Raiders upset sixth-seeded Winchester Thurston in the opening round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs Tuesday night at Norwin High School.

Ava DiAlessandro had an assist on Kincer’s goal, and Cowell made 17 saves, helping Waynesburg withstand an early assault from Winchester Thurston.

Waynesburg will play either Seton LaSalle or Brownsville in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Bentworth 3, Freedom 2

Brielle Dillon scored two goals, including the game-winner late in the second half, as second-seeded Bentworth edged Freedom 3-2 in a Class A first-round game played at Peters Township.

Bentworth will face either OLSH or Aquinas Academy in the quarterfinals.

A goal by Bella Moyer gave Bentworth a 2-1 lead 10 minutes into the second half, but Freedom tied the score with 17 minutes remaining.

Springdale 2, Chartiers-Houston 1

Host Springdale scored the only goal of the second half and edged Chartiers-Houston 2-1 in a Class A first-round match.

A goal by Chartiers-Houston’s Allie Wingard tied the score at 1-1 with 16 minutes left in the first half.
