STATE COLLEGE – The Peters Township High School girls golf team’s run of state championships ended Wednesday – barely.
The Indians, seeking a PIAA three-peat, placed second in the one-day team championships that were held on the Blue course at the Penn State Golf Courses.
Peters Township shot 16-over par 232 and finished only four strokes behind first-place Conestoga.
Ellie Benson paced PT by shooting 1-under 71, which made her the medalist for the girls competition. Her round included three birdies. WPIAL runner-up Betty Glyptis was close behind, carding a round of even-par 72.
Unlike the regular season, when four golfers score in girls dual matches, only three of the five golfers for each team counted in the final score. Olivia Ondrejko was third for PT with a round of 89.
Conestoga won despite not having a golfer on its team shoot better than 74.
Mount St. Joseph and Fox Chapel tied for third place at 253.
South Fayette placed fourth in the boys team tournament. The Lions played the Blue course in 8-over 296.
Sam Bishop had a stellar round for the Lions, shooting 3-under 69. It was tied for the second-lowest score on the day among all boys golfers. Bishop’s round included five birdies.
Brady Newman shot 73 and had a round that featured six birdies. Jackson Stephens and Noah Nickolas rounded out the Lions’ scoring with rounds of 74 and 80, respectively.
Only four of the five boys golfers counted in the team scoring.
South Fayette finished 10 strokes behind PIAA champion Unionville, which played the tournament at 2-under. Radnor was second and State College finished third.
