Showdown for the Century
Wash High and Seton LaSalle meet for the conference title

Coming into the season with plenty of returning players, Wash High coach Mike Bosnic and his staff knew the team had potential.
Whether or not that would yield results would come down to how fast they could realize it.
The Prexies have jelled as the season has progressed and now they have a chance to win a conference title.
Washington plays Seton LaSalle at 7 p.m. tonight for the Class 2A Century Conference title at Dormont Stadium.
Both teams come into the game at 5-0 in conference play and 8-1 overall.
“We knew coming in that we had a lot of guys back and it would be dependent on their attitude and how much they matured,” Bosnic said. “I think our seniors have become a really great group of leaders for us. They’ve stepped up and answered a lot of questions. I’m excited that they have this opportunity going into the last week of the season. We knew Seton LaSalle was going to be good and that it could very well come down to this last week.”
The winner will not only get the conference title, but a first-round bye.
Seton LaSalle is the defending conference champion and was a WPIAL finalist last season.
If Washington is going to dethrone the Rebels, it’ll have to do so at less than 100-percent physically. Bosnic said the Prexies are battling some injuries on both the line and at skill positions.
“We feel like we’ve been making strides and getting better every week,” Bosnic said. “We’re a little bit banged up right now and we hope we can overcome that.”
One player that’s fully healthy is quarterback Tristan Reed, who leads the team with a dozen rushing touchdowns and has thrown 1,240 yards and eight touchdowns. Maybe the most impressive feat for Reed is that he has not thrown an interception this season.
Reed has led an offense that scored 35 or more points in every game since Washington’s Week 1 loss to Steel Valley.
“He’s having a great year and has become a great leader,” Bosnic said. “He’s able to make a big play at any time and hopefully he’s able to do that for us.”
Jamarie Walker leads the team in rushing with 383 yards and is one of six players that are at 197 yards or better.
Washington has also been stout defensively. The most points allowed in a game was 21 in the loss to Steel Valley. Waynesburg scored 14 against Washington and everyone else has been in single digits with two shutouts.
Bosnic credited defensive coordinator John Digon for their success.
“He’s been doing it a really long time and he puts the kids in a good position every week,” Bosnic said. “He puts a lot of time and effort and pride into the defense and the kids have bought in. They’ve been working hard and getting better every week.”
The Prexies defense will be in for a stern test against the Rebels.
Seton LaSalle is coming off a 55-0 win over Keystone Oaks. Oddly enough, Washington beat Keystone Oaks by the exact same score.
Since their Week Zero loss to North Catholic, the Rebels have scored 30 or more points in all but one game.
They feature a strong running game led by 1,000-yard rusher Kymarr Freeman, who has 19 touchdowns. Freeman runs behind an offensive line that returned three starters.
“Their running backs run hard,” Bosnic said. “We’re going to have to tackle well if we want to win. They’re a really good team with a lot of weapons, but in particular we’re going to have to wrap up and tackle well.
They have size and are really good up front, so it’s definitely going to be a challenge.”
Another key player is Will Martin, a tight end and linebacker who is committed to Duquesne.
The Rebels have been more of a run-first offense this year, but quarterback Kia Jones has 642 yards passing.

Another big local game Friday is California at Jefferson-Morgan, which will decide the Class A Tri-County South. If California wins it’ll be the outright conference champion. If Jefferson-Morgan wins, there’s potential for a three-way tie if Bentworth beats Avella.
California beat Bentworth and Bentworth beat Jefferson-Morgan.
Last year, Jefferson-Morgan defeated California 28-27 in a wild game to win its first conference title since 2012.
N Trinity assured itself of a share of the Class 4A Big Six Conference title and can win it outright with a victory at Belle Vernon. The Leopards can hold onto the faint flicker of a hope at a wild card with a win over the Hillers.
Regardless of the result, the Hillers will be the first-place team coming out of the conference.
N South Fayette plays Moon and could bolster its case for a wild card with a win, although it might get in anyway as the fifth-place team in the Class 5A Allegheny Six Conference like it did last year.
N Monessen and Cornell meet for fourth place in the Class A Black Hills Conference. The winner almost assuredly will get a wild card.
N Waynesburg plays Sto-Rox and with a win sews up fourth place in the Class 2A Century Conference and likely a wild card.
N Canon-McMillan needs either a win against Central Catholic or a Norwin win over Mt. Lebanon to secure fourth place in Class 6A and the final playoff spot.
