The Bentworth boys soccer team won its third consecutive WPIAL Class A title with a 3-1 victory over OLSH Thursday night at Highmark stadium.

PITTSBURGH – Bentworth boys soccer finished off its WPIAL three-peat Thursday night and who else would be at the center of it?

The Moessner brothers.

Ryan and Adam Moessner have been leading the charge for the top-seeded Bearcats all season and factored in on each goal in a 3-1 win over No.2 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the Class A championship at Highmark Stadium.

Ryan had two goals and Adam scored once and had an assist.

“People say the pressure was on us, but we had already won two, so I think the pressure was on the other team to try and win one,” Adam said.

It also finished off a double for Bentworth, as the girls team won 1-0 against Sewickley Academy earlier in the night.

The Bearcats became the first team to win three consecutive WPIAL boys soccer championships since Quaker Valley did so from 1991-93.

South Fayette won 10 titles in a row from 1943-52. Peters Township won four in a row from 1986-89. Bridgeville won three straight in 1953-55.

Outside of that no one else has won three or more WPIAL titles in a row in boys soccer.

“It’s crazy and the kids won’t understand that for a long time,” Bearcats coach Nick Malarbi said. “It probably won’t sink in until they’re my age. Maybe then they’ll look back and say ‘Can you believe we actually did that?’ They’ll be sitting around a campfire one day and actually realize what they accomplished tonight.”

Bentworth (21-0) beat OLSH (17-1) for the second consecutive season in the finals.

Last year’s meeting was scoreless after two overtimes and went to penalties, but it was quickly clear that wouldn’t be the case in the rematch.

Adam Moessner set up older brother Ryan Moessner for a goal in the third minute to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

“We’ve been doing it all year,” Ryan said. “We both have over 40 goals and have been playing together since we were little kids. The chemistry shows.”

OLSH responded with a goal in the 25th minute. Andre Kolocouris scored off a corner kick for the Chargers to even the match.

Adam Moessner put the Bearcats back in front just before halftime. Caden Hackinson sent in a long ball that Adam tracked down and flipped into the net by OLSH’s 6-foot-7 goalkeeper Patrick Altmar.

Hackinson will play in playoff games on consecutive nights, because he’s the kicker on the Bentworth football team, which hosts Jeannette Friday.

OLSH’s Peter Zink was issued a yellow card for a foul on Ryan Moessner in the 27th minute.

Ryan Moessner gave the Bearcats a two-goal cushion three minutes into the second half scoring a goal off a pass from Blake Lusk.

“I made a run across and Blake was able to feed it to me,” Ryan said. “I beat a guy one-on-one and was able to put it away.”

Colby Lane was issued OLSH’s second yellow card with 16 minutes remaining after hauling down Adam Moessner in the open field.

OLSH generated several good chances after Bentworth went up two goals, but the Bearcats were never in danger of a dramatic finish.

Anytime the Chargers sent a ball in the box, the Bentworth defense won it and cleared it away.

“Our backline goes up against two 40-goal scorers, Ryan and Adam, in practice every day and those are such huge reps,” Malarbi said. “We shifted a couple people back just to see the game out, but why wouldn’t you? There’s so much on the line, so you just got to see the game out.”

Bentworth will not turn its attention to trying to win a state championship after falling in the PIAA Class A final 1-0 in overtime to Lancaster Mennonite last year.

“I heard we will be playing Mercyhurst Prep in the first round again like we did last year, so it’s kind of like déjà vu,” Malarbi said. “We’re going to give the kids a couple days off. I know all of them are going to go to the playoff football game tomorrow to support them. We’ll let them be kids for 48 hours and then get back to it.”
