WAYNESBURG – For those teams competing in the Century Conference this year, Washington has a warning.
The Prexies have a solid rushing game, anchored by the powerful running back Javohn Woods, and the passing of the strong-armed Tristan Reed, and the strong leg of Tyler Crawford. They have speed, size and quickness.
All that was on display Friday night in a 35-14 victory over Waynesburg in the conference opener for both teams. The win gives Washington a 3-1 overall mark while Waynesburg dropped to 2-2.
Reed scored three touchdowns.
The final score of the night was from Waynesburg, a 19-yard pass from Teagan Crouse to Jeff Blair.
Woods ground out the final eight yards of Wash High’s first drive of the third quarter to stretch the lead to 28-7.
Waynesburg had a chance to cut the Wash High lead in half during the third quarter but Wash High defended a pass from Teagan Crouse on a fourth-and-three play.
Reed running was the highlight of the first half for Washington as the 6-3 senior scored three rushing touchdowns to give Washington a 21-7 lead at halftime.
Reed’s first touchdown run came on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. It was set up by an interception by Ameer Nelson, who returned the football 40 yards to the Prexies’ 45-yard line. Eight plays later, Reed scored his first touchdown.
Reed’s second touchdown came on a 15-yard run around end to make it 14-0. Reed’s third touchdown came on a pretty draw play with 1:59 remaining in the first half.
Waynesburg finally got on the scoreboard with 25 seconds left in the half. Quarterback Teagan Crouse was flushed out of the pocket to his left at the 37-yard line. Crouse flipped a pass to Brookover, who zig-zagged his way to the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Washington’s coaching staff felt Crouse was across the line of scrimmage before he let the pass go but the officials did not agree.
