BEAVER – Three local girls golfers are within striking distance of the lead after the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A and 2A Championships that were held Tuesday at Seven Oaks Country Club.
Defending Class 3A champion Ellie Benson of Peters Township is in second place and teammate Betty Glyptis is right behind her in third place.
In Class 2A, Chartiers-Houston’s JoJo Jaskulski is in second place.
The final round will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
Though they are high on the leaderboard, all three local golfers will have a lot of distance to make up to catch the leaders. Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward leads in Class 3A after shooting a round of 3-under 69. Benson shot 2-over 74 and Glyptis carded a round of 5-over 77.
In Class 2A, defending champion Alyssa Zhang of Shady Side Academy has a six-stroke lead over Jaskulski. Zhang shot 1-over 73. Jaskulski is at 7-over after carding a 79 in the first round. Riley Kontul of North Catholic is in third place after shooting an 8-over 80.
Morgan forged her lead over Benson and Glyptis by putting together a round that included five birdies and an eagle-2 on the 370-yard par-4 No. 5 hole. Benson’s round was consistent and included two birdies but she also had a double-bogey on the 18th hole.
In Class 3A, Canon-McMillan’s Jordyn Larkin is tied for 12th place after a round of 84, one shot better than Trinity’s Izzy Lesako. South Fayette teammates Emma Nickolas and Olivia Valentino finished in 22nd and 28th place, respectively.
In Class 2A, Belle Vernon’s Sydney Stark shot 100 and is tied for 12th place.
