NA hands Peters Twp. first regular-loss in two years

WEXFORD – All good streaks come to an end.
For Peters Township girls soccer team an unbeaten run of 28 games in the regular season was stopped Thursday night.
Mwende Abai’s second half goal proved to be the difference as North Allegheny (8-2-2) earned a 2-1 win, handing Peters Township (9-1-2) its first regular season loss since 2023.
Peters Township was 25-0-3 in their unbeaten regular season stretch.
It was a rematch of last year’s WPIAL semifinal, which Peters Township won 2-1 in overtime on its way to its third district title.
The game was originally scheduled for Monday night, but severe weather postponed it to Thursday.
Although it was a nonsection game the night after each team played a section match, both Peters Township coach Pat Vereb and North Allegheny coach Chuck Kelley thought it was important to play.
That’s because they both crave quality competition and that’s what each team brought to Newman Stadium Thursday night.
“It was a really good game,” Kelley said. “I think both teams played hard and were both on back-to-back games. That part makes it hard managing the energy levels and making sure that we can come out of this healthy, because we have a bunch of important games remaining.”
Though it was the first regular season loss for Peters Township in two years, there’s plenty to take out of it.
“There was a little bit of roster management tonight, but North Allegheny is one of the better teams in the WPIAL,” Vereb said. “It wasn’t ideal to play them the night after playing a tough section match, but we didn’t want to shy away from playing good competition. It’s good for us to play these types of teams.”
Abai’s winner came in the 48th minute. She tracked down a long pass and got past the Peters Township defense. That left her one-on-one with Peters Township keeper Molly Kubistek and she put a shot inside the right post to make it 2-1 North Allegheny.
The final score could’ve been more lopsided, but Kubistek, a Cincinnati recruit, made a pair of saves on point-blank shots in the second half to keep it a one-goal game.
Peters Township struck first in the 12th minute.
Brynn Busch beat Tigers goalie Jordan Beemer to a loose ball in the box and kicked it into a yawning net.
Busch has been a big offensive contributor, while another standout forward, Taylor McCullough, is on the mend from injury.
“She’s been dynamic for us,” Vereb said. “She had two really good goals against Canon-Mac last night as well. Her being only a freshman and being as dangerous as she is for us is a huge plus.”
In the 26th minute, Luciana Zagacki drew a foul in the box, which led to a successful penalty shot by Emma Schupansky that evened the score at 1-1. Zagacki got behind the defense and was tripped up on a free run toward the net. Peters Township’s Emory Von Ackeren received a yellow card on the play.
After Von Ackeren was booked, Schupansky put the ball down on the spot and deposited it into the bottom right corner of the net.
With Peters Township’s loss there are no unbeaten teams in Class 4A.
The Indians will now turn their attention to securing a section title.
“Even though we lost we played a really good game,” Kubistek said. “I don’t think we should let this game be a deciding factor for the rest of our season. Last year we went undefeated until the first round of states. We were hoping to do the same this year, but maybe we can still go unbeaten in section.”
